Hurricane Ike's Impact on Students

 September 2008

                                                                                            Campus Hours (see below)

Is there a hurricane emergency fund for students?
Yes, each campus has a student emergency fund.  Students can apply for funds using the emergency request form.

When will financial aid funds be disbursed?
After October 6th, loan disbursements will arrive on a weekly basis throughout the semester.”

The Refund relief will affect financial aid students in the following ways:

  • If the student applying for the refund in the fall received federal financial aid and the student completely withdraws from courses, a return of title IV funds calculation will have to be done in accordance with the federal regulations.  This will result in the student owing a balance back to the institution.
  • If a student withdraws from some courses but not all the student will retain all of their financial aid and will not be affected immediately by the withdraw.  What this will affect is the student’s academic progress.  These courses (same as in scenario #1) will count as attempted courses that were not completed and will lower the student’s completion percentage.  If both scenarios 1 and 2 result in a suspension for financial aid the student may appeal the calculation if they can show that the hurricane is a major cause for their failure to meet the standards then we can override the calculation and allow the student more time on financial aid.
  • For a student who is receiving the maximum financial aid and receives the voucher for the spring semester we (financial aid) will have to (in most cases) reduce the amount of other aid a student is receiving because this voucher will count as financial resource.  In most cases this will result in the reduction of a Stafford loan which will decrease the student’s overall debt.

Is the semester going to be extended?
