What is Tech Prep and Articulation?

Tech Prep links high school Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses to college workforce technical courses through articulation as part of a 2-year Associate of Applied Science degree.

Articulation simply means the high school course objectives match the college course objectives. Also, high school teacher credentials match the college instructors credentials for the course they are teaching to maintain compliance with SACS. In essence, the articulated course is taught at college level.

Types of Articulation

There are two types of articulation:

Local Articulation

Advanced Technical Credit (ATC) -

Statewide Articulation

Established for specialty courses not on ATC or to support a non-ATC trained teacher

Established for common secondary and post-secondary technical courses

Application submitted by the high school teacher through the Tech Prep coordinator and reviewed by the college faculty

Application submitted at Part 1 of ATC training events, then reviewed by the ATC program housed at Stephen F. Austin State University.

Application consists of detailed work experience outside of the classroom and degrees and certificates

Renewal: with every change in the curriculum taught or teacher credentials. If no changes, then the agreement does not expire

Renewal: every three years by attending an ATC training event. Lone Star College System does not hold these events; however the Gulf Coast Tech Prep consortium hosts at least 1 time a year. Otherwise, summer conferences are the most common place to receive training.

Student may be eligible for credit at one of the Lone Star College System college campuses

Students may be eligible for credit at any participating college or technical school in the state that offers a matching course
