Counseling Services
Change, stress and self-development are all a part of college life. The North Harris College Counseling Center offers free confidential counseling services to help students overcome problems while gaining self-understanding and direction. All counseling services are available to current NHC students.

Services provided by the NHC counseling faculty include:
    • Career and Educational Counseling: To assist in exploring possible vocational direction while learning more about yourself and your place in the workforce.

    • Personal-Social Counseling: To help examine concerns which interfere with your personal development and growth or relationships with others.

    • Referral: To provide resource information and referral to outside agencies for ongoing assistance with personal and emotional concerns.

    How Do Counselors Help?

Counselors are professionals who have been trained to assist individuals by:

    • Helping people understand themselves, their abilities and potential.

    • Helping people through changing circumstances and transitions from one stage in life to the other.

    • Helping people grow in the midst of personal crisis or despite lack of resources.

    • Helping people set goals, overcome barriers, access resources and plan fulfilling, productive lives.

Appointment or Walk-In...How Do I Decide?
The Counseling Center provides both academic advising and counseling services. Advising is available on a walk-in basis for brief academic questions; counseling is available by appointment. How do you know which format fits your needs? Ask yourself the following questions:
    Walk-In Advising Counseling by Appointment
Which classes are recommended based on my placement scores? Are there tests I can take that will help me select a major or career?

Could someone look at my transcript to see if I'm selecting the right courses?

How can I manage my home and school obligations more efficiently?
How many classes should I take if I work full-time? How can I prevent feeling so stressed out before taking tests?
Which courses at NHC are transferable to the university I plan to attend? What should I do if problems at home are interfering with my studies?
What is the difference between an Associate of Science degree and an Associate of Applied Science degree?

What can I do? I have a hard time concentrating and I can't seem to sleep at night.

What universities offer the program I want to pursue? My classes aren't going well. Maybe college isn't for me.
