Dr. Steve Head to Chair Texas Developmental Education Committee

HOUSTON (Oct. 31, 06) – Dr. Steve Head, executive vice chancellor at NHMCCD, will chair the new Developmental Education Advisory Committee for the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.

The committee will be responsible for advising the coordinating board on developmental education, the Texas Success Initiative and other issues related to better preparing students for college.

Dr. Head was chosen to chair the committee because of his experience leading the district’s efforts in developmental studies and student success.

“As a district, our most important objective is helping students achieve their goals. Successful initiatives like our Student Success project, High School Bridge Program and summer programs, which have proven to be effective in closing the educational gaps that exists among students, have made us one of the leading institutions in the nation for student success and developmental education,” said Dr. Head.

Dr. Head will be working with other educators and administrators around the state to make specific recommendations on ways to better serve under-prepared students. First up for the committee is the development of specific action plan to address the questions and recommendations that were discussed in recent legislative sessions.

“There are a number of successful programs taking place across the state. This committee will be making specific proposals to the Coordinating Board that we hope will be considered for funding and wider implementation across the state.  I look forward to doing my part to make sure students around the state have every opportunity to succeed,” he said.

NHMCCD comprises Cy-Fair College, Kingwood College, Montgomery College, North Harris College, Tomball College, six satellite centers and The University Center. To learn more, visit www.nhmccd.edu.
