HOUSTON (Feb. 16, 07) – Carol Mims Galloway, president of the NAACP Houston Branch, will discuss the organization’s 98 years of service to the nation at noon, Wednesday, Feb. 21, at the NHMCCD District Service and Training Center, 5000 Research Forest Dr. in The Woodlands.

She will speak in the college district’s board room. The presentation is free and open to the public.

Mrs. Galloway was elected in 1999 as the first African American female city council member for District B, serving three terms. In 1991, she became the first African American female elected to the Houston Independent School District Board of Education, Trustee District 2, where she served two terms.

Mrs. Galloway, a native Houstonian, attended Wheatley High School, San Jacinto College, and the University of Houston. 

Virtually all of her life has been committed to helping people. She has worked for quality education, as well as for economic and racial justice. She served as PTA president, member of the Houston Area Urban League Education Committee, Acres Home Citizen Chamber of Commerce Board, and Texas Education Agency Advisory Committee for Technology. She was appointed by Mayor Kathy Whitmire as Affirmative Action Commissioner for the City of Houston, and Kashmere Garden Re-Development Commissioner for the city. She also, was appointed by Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee to the National Commission for African-American Education as the representative for the 18th Congressional District.

Mrs. Galloway was sworn in as president of the NAACP Houston Branch on January 7, 2007. At present, she is also a member of numerous organizations; including the National Congress of Black Women, Inc., National Women of Achievers, Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc., National Council of Negro Women, American Leadership Forum Class X, Harris County Black Democrats, Harris County Black Caucus, Labor Council for Latin American Advancement, Northeast Concerned Citizen League, and Kashmere Garden Baptist Church.
 
Mrs. Galloway has received numerous awards and honors, including the UNCF Distinguished Lou Rawls Parade of Stars Leadership Award, National NAACP Benjamin Hook “Keeper of the Flame Award”, “Top Lady  of the Year 1995”, along with having Carol Mims Galloway Day proclaimed by the City of Houston. She also received numerous Outstanding Community Service Awards; NAACP President Award, Houston Retired Teachers Association, Houston Citizen Chambers of Commerce Award, Port of Houston Authority, Houston Council of PTAs and the Wheatley Alumni and Ex-Students Association.

Her philosophy of life is to help others by getting involved. “We cannot do everything, but we can do something by having a strong, abiding faith in God, we can progress faster if we each shoulder a bit of the responsibility,” she says.
