HOUSTON (Feb. 6, 07) – Student enrollment increased by more than five percent across the North Harris Montgomery Community College District for the spring 2007 semester which began January 16. As of the official day of record, 45,005 students were signed up for classes at the district’s five community colleges.

Cy-Fair College led the way with approximately 11,000 students registered to attend. North Harris College followed with more than 10,500. Montgomery College had more than 8,200 students enrolled and Tomball College had 7,800 students sign up. Kingwood College grew by nearly eight percent to just over 7,200 students.

Distance learning classes continued to be a popular choice among NHMCCD students. Approximately one out every five students is enrolled in a distance learning course this semester, including 50 percent of the students at Kingwood College. District wide, the number of students taking distance learning increased by more than six percent and the number of distance learning classes taken grew by nearly eight percent.

“The flexibility provided by distance learning attracts a lot of students to the program,” said Debra Rockefeller, director of distance learning for NHMCCD. “The vast majority of these students are taking one or two classes online in addition to at least one traditional course. For many, this allows them to progress more quickly toward their educational goal while still balancing their jobs and families.”
