The three utility failures likely at NHC are gas leaks, water leaks and electric
power failure. In either case, notify the police and F&PO immediately, giving
them the nature of the utility failure, your exact location and the extent of
the failure if known.
Gas Leak
- Evacuate the area. Do not use fire alarms as they may cause sparks.
- Police will notify the Aldine Fire Department. F&PO will notify Enron
and shut off area gas valves, electric supply, heaters, etc.
- Persons should retreat at least 500 ft. from any building affected.
- Crisis management team will be notified and a decision will be made if classes
can be relocated or cancelled.
- Under fire department direction, affected buildings will be ventilated.
- The fire department will determine when building(s) can be reoccupied and
repairs made.
- External affairs will prepare any public announcements.
Electric Power Failure
- Notify police and F&PO. If the failure is expected to be extensive or
long term, evacuation may be necessary.
- The crisis management team will recommend if closing is necessary.
- If classes are to continue, persons will shelter in place.
- If classes are cancelled, police will assist with evacuation and traffic
control. People with mobility disabilities should go to the nearest external
balcony if elevators are not functional and escape from upper floors is difficult.
- All evacuated building will be secured until re-opening.
- External affairs will prepare and publish any public announcements, telephone
recordings, etc.
Water Leaks or Failure
- Notify F&PO. After hours call the police.
- In case of a health or sanitary emergency, the crisis management team will
be notified.
- If classes are to be cancelled, the president will be notified for a decision,
and closing procedures will be instituted.
- External affairs will make the necessary announcements.
