MS WORD: GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

 

1.         Open word by clicking on the Word icon on the bar at he bottom of your screen.

 

2.         If you do not have the Formatting toolbar on screen, click the mouse pointer on View, scroll down to Toolbars, and click on Formatting.

 

3.         Name, Class, Date:  On the top left of your paper type your Name, Class, and Date as follows:

4.         Title: Click the mouse pointer on the Center icon on the formatting toolbar, and then type your title, using appropriate capitalization, as follows:

5.         Double Space: Click the mouse pointer on Format, scroll down to Paragraph, and click on the down arrow next to Single in the Line Spacing Box.  Now Click on double, and then on OK.

 

6.         Typing the Paper: Click on the Align Left icon, hit the Tab Key, and begin typing your paper.

 

7.               Inserting Page Numbers: Click on Insert and scroll down to Page Numbers; next, click the down arrow next to the Position box and click on Top of page (header); now click in the box next to Show number on first page (to remove the check), and finally on OK.

 

8.         Spell Checking: Words that the MS dictionary does not recognize will have a wavy red line under them.  To spell check the whole document, place the cursor at the top of the page and click the spell check icon (ABC).

 

9.         Word Total: Click on Tools, Word Count and you will see how many words there are in your essay.  Type this number on the last page of your essay on the bottom right-hand side.

 

10.            Printing:  When you are ready to print, simply click on the print icon on the standard toolbar.  At the bottom right of the screen the number of pages printed will flash—WARNING: Do  Not click on the print key more than once.

 

 

DO NOT TURN OFF THE COMPUTER

 

 

1.            Selecting:  Before you can cut, copy, or paste text you must select it. Put your cursor in front of the word or phrase you want to select and drag across it; it will turn black  [You can select your whole document by placing the cursor in the left margin—where it becomes an arrow—holding down the CTRL key and clicking the left mouse button.]

 

2.            Cutting: To cut the word or phrase out (so you can paste it elsewhere in the text), simply put the mouse arrow on the cut icon on the formatting toolbar (the scissors) and click. The text will be held on the clipboard.

 

3.            Copying:  To copy the word or phrase, simply put the arrow on the copy icon and click.

 

4.            Pasting:  To paste the word or phrase, simply put the cursor where you want the text to appear, put the arrow on the paste icon, and click

 

Saving a File to Disk and Opening a Saved File

 

Warning:  Be sure that you have a Formatted, High Density disk in the A Drive, and be sure that you do not save to My Documents on the hard drive.

 

1.         Open File on the Menu Bar, scroll down to Save AS, and release the mouse button. 

 

2.         Next click on the down arrow next to the Save in: box, scroll down to the 3 1/2 Floppy (A:) entry, and click. 

 

3.         When the drop down box opens, type the name of your document in the File Name box.

 

4.         Finally, simply click on the Save button and wait until the save is completed.

 

5.         To open a saved file from your disk, simply click on the open file icon on the standard toolbar, click on the down arrow in the Look in box, and then scroll down to and click on the 3 1/2 Floppy (A:) entry. The contents of your floppy will be displayed.

 

6.         Now simply double click on the name of the file you want to open and work on.

 

 

 

Exiting Word:  Click on the X in the upper right-hand corner of your screen.
