The title of the description should be the name of the tool or implement being described. Keep in mind that a technical description can be given of many things: a tool, an implement, a device, a natural object, a legal document, a concept.

I. Section One: Introduction (For simple items, one paragraph)

A. Give a formal definition of the item in the first sentence (What is it?). See page 132.

B. Tell who uses the item or in what field it is used.

C. Give the purpose or function of the item (What is it used for?).

D. Describe the overall or general appearance of the item.

1. Give its physical dimensions (Size, Shape, Composition, Texture, Color, Weight, Position). See page 139.

2. Try to create a visual image of the item.

3. Use analogy and compare the item to a simple object.

II. Section Two: List the Principal Parts into Which the Item Can Be Divided.

A. List the parts in some rational order (Top to Bottom, Front to Back).

B. Be sure to properly orient your reader so that he knows what is top, bottom, front or back.

C. Group the parts into major parts and subparts (for more complicated items).

D. Use an "outline of parts" as a separate section rather than giving a simple list (for more complicated items).

E. Point out implications (Answer the so-what questions).

III. Section Three: Part-by-Part Description

A. In a separate paragraph for each, describe each part in detail in the order in which you listed the parts in II.A.
1. Give each part's physical dimension (Size, Shape, Composition, Color, Weight).

2. Explain the relationship or methods of attachment of each part to the item as a whole or to other parts.

B. Provide adequate transition between one paragraph and the next.

IV. Section Four: Conclusion

A. Provide some sort of conclusion. You might tell, briefly, how the item is used or how it works.

B. Keep in mind that your description may be only a part of a larger design, such as instructional process or definition. In this situation, let the overall purpose be your guide as to what to include in the description.
