Paradise Lost
Cosmology: Milton’s cosmology is
based on the Ptolemaic system, although he knew of the Copernican
system. Milton knew Galileo and incorporates
information about his discoveries with the telescope.
Theology:
ØTheory of
Accommodation. God surpasses man’s understanding; therefore His
presentation, in scripture and in Milton, must be fitted to man’s
comprehension.
ØChrist is Divine,
but lower than God the Father.
ØDenies the
creation ex nihilo; primal matter, chaos, is as eternal as spirit. The Creation brings order out of
chaos.
Ø
