I.Born
in Geneva of a watchmaker father and a mother who died a week
after he was born. In 1722, after a fight, his father fled the
city. Rousseau was sent to a boarding
school.
II.When
he was 12, he was apprenticed to an engraver who beat him. At 16, he
ran away to Savoy and became a Catholic.
III.At
17 he moved into the house of Madam de Warrens (Mamma) and later entered a
seminary to train for the priesthood (it did not last).
IV.In
1745 he finally settled in Paris, living with Therese le Vasseur. All five of his children were put in an
orphanage.
V.In 1766 he went to
England as the guest of David Hume.
VI.In
1770 he returned to Paris on condition he would write nothing against
government or religion.
