Entrance Requirements for English 1301


Both College Level Reading and Writing Scores are Required for English 1301

COMPASS

Reading                         81+


Writing: Objective         85+
             Essay               6+ *

*If this essay score is 7 or above the writing objective score requirement is waived.

The COMPASS Test** is a computerized test which beginning college students can take no more than once every 30 days.. Accepted by the state of Texas as a THEA alternative, it is administered on a walk-in basis in the North Harris College Assessment Center (Room A 102). The COMPASS scores required for entry into English 1301 are listed above.

ASSET

Reading                          41+


Writing: Objective          45+
             Essay                6+ *

The ASSET Test** is a standardized test (using a pencil and answer sheet) which beginning college students can take no more than once every 30 days. Accepted by the state of Texas as a THEA alternative, it is administered on a walk-in basis in the North Harris College Assessment Center (Room A 102). The ASSET scores required for entry into English 1301 are listed above.

** Students must wait 30 days after taking either test before attempting a retake of either test. To take either test, a student must present ID, a new student registration form (pink), and a referral card from the counseling center. THEA

The THEA test is mandated by the state of Texas for all new students (although the ASSET and COMPASS tests are state-approved alternatives). Contact the counseling center at North Harris College (A-104) for information on registration and testing dates.

 


To be exempt from THEA (COMPASS or ASSET) and still qualify for ENGL 1301:

For any of the three tests above, the student must have met all the score requirements listed in order to avoid new testing and be eligible for ENGL 1301. If any one of the score requirements is not met under the TAAS, ACT, or SAT, the student must take all parts of one of the following tests: THEA, COMPASS, or ASSET.
