Certification Procedures


Texas Application

  • Obtain and complete your EMS Personnel Certification Application for ECA and EMT-basic. This application will be provided to you in a course completion packet mailed to you at the conclusion of the semster. You will need your "TDH Course Number" and the "Course Completion Date" in order to complete the application. This information can be located on your EMSP 1501 syllabus and schedule or by contacting your EMS Course Coordinator (Steven Kolar or Bill Drees).
  • Submit your TDH application with your $50.00 fee to: Texas Department of Health, Attn: ZZ100-160 EMS, 1100 West 49st, Austin, Texas 78756-3199. The fee is non-refundable and should be paid by money order or cashier's check..

NREMT Application

  • Obtain and complete your National Registry: EMT Basic Application. This application will be provided to you during your final examination for EMSP 1501 and instructions will be given on how to complete it. The NREMT application will then be collected from you to allow the program to obtain necessary signatures.
  • Your TDH Course Coodinator and the EMS Professions Medical Director will complete the application and return it to you as part of the course completion packet mailed to you at the conclusion of the semester.
  • DO NOT mail the NREMT application once it is returned to you. You will take this NREMT application and a money order or cashier's check for $20.00 to the examination site.

Schedule of Certification Examination
(TDH personnel schedule and proctor the NREMT Basic examination)

  • Check the TDH: Certification Search webpage to see if you are eligible to schedule an examination. When your application status reads "Eligible for National Registry test" or "Eligible for Testing", visit the TDH: EMS Examinations webpage and follow the directions to schedule your examination. In order to be "Eligible", TDH must have received your TDH application and a Course Completion Roster (CCR) from your Course Coordinator. North Harris College faxes the CCR to TDH in Austin within one week of your EMSP 1501 final examination.

Taking the Certification Examination

  • TDH administers examinations only by appointment.
  • No one may accompany you to the test site. Children are not permitted.
  • You should arrive 30 minutes before the scheduled start of the examination.
  • You will need a governmental identification with photograph and 2 pencils.
  • No pagers, cell phones, etc. are permitted.

(In order to work as an EMT in Texas, you must be certified by TDH. NREMT certification does NOT allow you to work on an ambulance in Texas.)

  • You will receive your grades and NR certificate and ID card from the National Registry office. You will receive the state certificate and ID card from the state office. Expect to receive written results approximately 3 weeks after taking the exam. Results are NOT available by phone.

If You Are Unsuccessful...

  • Remember, you have 1 year to take the examination up to 3 times before your skills testing expires.
  • You must complete all of the above steps (except the TDH application) again in order to test a 2nd or 3rd time. This means you will have to obtain a new NREMT application and submit another $20.00 fee each time you attempt the examination.
