Q: Is there a charge for any of the services in the Learning Center?
A: No. All services in the Learning Center, including tutoring, are free. You have already paid for these services through your tuition and lab fees.
Q: What happens in a writing tutorial?
A: The writing tutors will talk with you about any stage of the writing project--invention, drafting, revision, or editing.
Q: Will the tutor correct or proofread my paper for me?
A: No. The tutors will be happy to help you with editing and proofreading strategies. They will help you in specific problematic issues seen in your writing. But they will not correct your paper for you or point out all of your mistakes.
Q: How much time can I spend with the tutor?
A: You may have one thirty- minute appointment per day with the writing tutor.
Q: Will my tutoring session be confidential?
A: Yes.Your visit will remain confidential unless you want a copy of the tutor consultation form sent to your teacher. Students are responsible for knowing which assignments are not appropriate for receiving tutor assistance (such as take home exams).
Q: Should I bring anything to the tutorial?
A: It is often helpful to bring your assignment and textbook to the tutorial as well as a 3-1/2" HD disk if you want to use the computer. Bring any notes, ideas, outlines and rough drafts that you have already generated. Also, think about what you want from the tutorial, and tell the tutor what you want to work on.
Q: Do I have to bring anything to the tutorial?
A: No. If you just want to talk to the tutor about getting started with a paper, or about handling your reading and writing assignment, that is fine.
Q: Do I need an appointment to meet with a writing tutor?
A: It is generally best to schedule an appointment. However, immediate appointments are often available. Call (281) 618-5445 or come by Academic 200 to make an appointment.
Q: What is the Grammar Hotline?
A: The Grammar Hotline is available for a one to two minute response to a quick question about any writing issue. The Grammar Hotline number is (281) 618-5483.
Q: Do I need to be a NHC student to see a tutor?
A: No. Priority, however, is given to students in the NHMCCD system. Visitors who are not part of the NHMCCD system are asked not to schedule advanced appointments.
