NHC student’s art included in prestigious exhibit                       Any artist would be thrilled to participate in Houston’s Visual Arts Alliance open show. The prestigious annual exhibit draws hundreds of entries from across the country. This year, the juried exhibit featured the work of 47 artists. One of those was Ludmila Joubrina, a recent graduate of North Harris College.

“It is an honor to be in this show,” says John Stuart, exhibit chair. “The real honor comes from the juror, who determines what will be in each show.”

Marysol Nieves, senior curator of The Bronx Museum of the Arts, has judged the show for the last two years.
“Nieves is in a pretty high position and is a noted artist nationally,” Stuart says. “To get in one of her shows, means that she thinks your work has merit. It is a notable achievement.”

More than 300 works were submitted for the exhibit, which ran from Apr. 1 to May 3 at 3 Allen Center in downtown Houston. Two of Joubrina’s paintings were selected for  the exhibit.

Joubrina, age 20, received an Associates Art degree at North Harris College in May. She will continue her studies at the Parsons School of Design in New York in the fall, where she plans to study fashion design.

“I got here (North Harris College) by accident,” Joubrina says. “I came to Nimitz High School and decided to stay.”

An international exchange student from Russia, Joubrina completed one semester at Nimitz High School before entering North Harris College. There, she excelled academically, qualifying for the college’s honor society, the national dean’s list and the All-American scholar program.

“I have had some really great professors at North Harris College,” she says. “They are here because they want to teach. I love this school.”
