Some of us dream about that phone call from an editor inquiring about a submitted manuscript or portfolio. Here’s a way to increase that chance. On Saturday, Feb. 22, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., North Harris College’s Writing Center and the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) will host an Editor Day: Open House on the NHC campus, academic building, room A-126.

Attendees will be able to submit manuscripts and find out what five editors from prestigious publication houses have to say about tailoring submissions to editors’ needs and preferences. Ordinarily closed to unsolicited submissions, these editors will be accessible to Editor Day: Open House event attendees.
 
Event participants will also learn about an editor’s first impression of submitted manuscripts, and how a first page can give a story wings or sink its chances of ever seeing daylight.
 
Five editors will be presenting and seeking various manuscripts. All of the editors represent outstanding publishing houses including Acquisitions Printing; Alfred A. Knopf, and Crown Books for Young Readers; Dutton Children’s Books; Candlewick Press and Children’s Press. 

Registration fees are $70 for SCBWI members ($95 for non-members). Registration is limited. The event fee also includes a continental breakfast and chef salad lunch. Art and Book display: SCBWI members who are also local subscribers may participate in an art and book display, which will be open to the public following a private viewing by visiting editors.
