North Harris College student receives Metropolitan Business Alliance scholarship
North Harris College student, Zulema Cardenas, was recently awarded the Metropolitan Business Alliance (MBA) scholarship for spring 2002. The $350 scholarship is awarded to a sophomore level North Harris College student pursuing an associate’s degree in business or business related degree.

MBA, a weekly business networking club, was formed in 1982 by a group of FM 1960 - area business owners with the intention of sharing business contacts, building friendships and learning through educational presentations.
 
The Metropolitan Business Alliance is a uniquely successful networking group. Only one member per profession is admitted in the group, ultimately improving business success through a positive non-competitive atmosphere. MBA supports products and services of one another and makes a conscious effort to recognize opportunities for other members. At weekly meetings, members or guest speakers offer motivational or educational presentations and exchange leads.
 
MBA is also a tremendous supporter of North Harris College and many of the members employ NHC students.

“The MBA group advocates higher education in the north Houston area. As area business owners, the group realizes a college education can make all the difference. It means a literate consumer base, stronger community, reduced crime rates, higher household incomes and a prepared work force,” says C.C. Sutphen, MBA’s president. “Cardenas is MBA’s third scholarship recipient.”

Cardenas is currently studying business at North Harris College, plans to transfer to the University of Houston and eventually wants to open her own small business in the Houston area.

Cardenas is the second to youngest of six children, a 1998 graduate of Eisenhower High School in the Aldine Independent School District, and an Aldine College Endowment Scholarship Foundation (ACESF) scholarship winner. Cardenas is also very excited because she will be the first college graduate in her family.
 
“I chose North Harris College because of the cost savings, and it was close to home,” says Cardenas. “Both my brother and my sister attended NHC’s Parkway Center. I was impressed with how helpful the college was with financial aid. Financial aid and these scholarships have allowed me to work part-time. And, working part-time I have more time to devote to my classes.This scholarship money is helping me to continue my educational goals. I am so grateful to Metropolitan Business Alliance.”
