COMPASS is a computer-adaptive placement test measuring skills in Reading, English, and Mathematics. It helps determine placement in your courses. It is also used an Alternative TASP test for students who have not yet taken the TASP test. There is very little pressure as there is no time limit. Students usually take about 3 1/2 hours to complete the test. COMPASS is "user-friendly", no experience with computers is needed. The computer selects questions for you on the basis of your answers to previous questions. Assessment Center staff will assist you in beginning COMPASS and will be available if you need additional help. The computer will explain how to record your answers as you take the test. Following the test, you will need to attend a New Student Information Session. At the end of the session, you will meet with an advisor to discuss available courses and establish a schedule of your classes.
Should I review before taking the COMPASS?
Some students find it helpful to review before taking the test. The test is simply designed to help you and the college determine whether you are ready to immediately start the program you have chosen or need some additional preparation first.
What type of questions will I be asked on COMPASS?
The first set of questions on COMPASS asks for information about you: your name, social security number, and background. You will also be given an opportunity to indicate areas such as financial aid, child care, career counseling, or tutoring with which you may need help.Go to the sample test section to get more information about the content and format of the test. Reviewing this information may make you feel more comfortable with the test.
When can I take the COMPASS?
COMPASS can be taken during the hours that our Assessment Center is open. You must arrive 3 1/2 hours before closing time.
When will I get my scores?
You will get your scores for the multiple choice part of the test immediately upon completion of the test. Your essay score will be mailed to your home later. After you complete the test, you will need to attend a New Student Information Session. Your test scores will be explained further at this session, and you meet with a counselor or advisor to select your courses.
