FINANACIAL AID FAQ'S

Q: When will I know something if I turn in my application by April 1?
A: The earliest you will receive an award letter or not eligible letter is in the middle of July.
Q: Can I still apply for financial aid if I miss the April 1 priority filing date?
A: Yes, but remember the process time is approximately 10-14 weeks (2-3months) after your file is complete so the longer you delay there is no guarantee that your file will be processed before the start of class. Also, North Harris College is allocated other grants that are awarded to students on a first-come first-serve basis. Don't wait!
Q: What if I am not awarded financial aid by the time payment is due for term?
A: You will have only three options:
  • Pay for your tuition, fees, & books and later get reimbursed if you are determined eligible for grants, or;
  • Receive an emergency short-term loan to help pay for your tuition, fees, & books if you will later have Pell Grant eligibility. The amount of the loan is dependent upon the amount of your eligibility for the Pell Grant. This is an estimated loan that is subject to change if you later do not qualify for the grant.
  • If you are not eligible for the Pell Grant and if you are not able to pay your tuition and fees in full the Business Office offers a deferred payment plan. (Contact the Business Office for more details)
Q: When can I expect the remainder of my financial aid for the term?
A: Grant disbursements for the term will be made as scheduled below:
  • Students who had grants awarded prior to the start of classes for the term will have their tuition, fees and books charged against the grant. Any remaining balance will be mailed to the student's home address by October 1st (fall) or March 1st (spring).
  • Students who have their grant awarded after classes begin, will have any remaining balance mailed to their home approximately one month after the award has been made.
  • It is the student's responsibility to verify that the address listed with our Admissions Office is correct.
  • Note - If a student has courses that begin later in the semester, their checks will not be mailed until the last course has started.
  • Note - Students need to liing a picture ID.
Q: When can I expect my Federal Student Loan?
A: Federal Student Loan Disbursements will be released to the students according to the following schedule:
  • Students who had grants awarded prior to the start of classes for the term will have their tuition, fees and books charged against the grant. Any remaining balance will be mailed to the student's home address by October 1st (fall) or March 1st (spring).
  • Students who have their grant awarded after classes begin, will have any remaining balance mailed to their home approximately one month after the award has been made.
  • It is the student's responsibility to verify that the address listed with our Admissions Office is correct.
  • Note -
If a student has courses that begin later in the semester, their checks will not be mailed until the last course has started.
Q: Will financial aid pay for Community Education (CE) courses?
A: Yes, but there are only select courses that financial aid will pay for. For a list of those courses check with Community Education. Funding for these CE courses are limited so it is recommended to apply early. Awards are made on a first-come first-serve basis.
Q: What are my chances to receive a Pell Grant?
A: There really is no way for us to determine a student's chances until they have actually gone through the Pell Grant process. If you are interested in applying for loans then this process must be completed first. Some scholarships as well require that the student has applied for the Federal Pell Grant.
Q: What if I was previously denied the Pell Grant?
A: There is no harm in reapplying plus if you apply early enough then you could be considered for other grant funding if you qualify.
Q: What if I am transferring to NHMCCD, will my money from another college transfer automatically?
A: The money does not transfer automatically. You must apply at the new school and let your former school know you are not going to be attending their institution. Check the financial aid transfer requirements. (See bulletin for details)
