As part of Diversity Initiatives, the Office of Multicultural Services
has collaborated with other campus departments and organizations in presenting
events that celebrate the rich diversity that permeates our campus community.
One objective of diversity month is to foster an open and aware campus community
that respects individuals for their uniqueness yet places the focus on our commonalities
in these activities and to experience the cultural diversity. Review planned
Cultural Diversity activities.
Diversity Initiatives is a coordinated effort
of the Office of Multicultural Services to recognize and celebrate individual
uniqueness of our campus community.
A community consists of dreams, ideas, and togetherness. It is a blend of ideals
of men and women from diverse backgrounds, like woven threads in a colorful
tapestry. We have goals and dreams to fulfill. We are committed to the community,
working hand-in-hand with companies and creating opportunities and jobs. Each
new idea inspires us to work and grow within this diverse fabric called community.
To that end, the threads of our community are further highlighted below:
Acceptance:
- Have a discussion with someone regarding individual responsibility within
the community.
- Say hello to everyone you see on campus whether you know them or not.
- Embrace differences.
- Recognize that diversity is an aspiration as well as an asset.
Understanding:
- Discuss what your department or friends will do to build an open community.
- Get to know faculty members' or students' interests and skills.
- Learn a new foreign or modern language.
- Discover something unique about the cultural heritage of someone you have
just met.
Respect:
- Speak up if another person is treating someone disrespectfully.
- Sit with people from another race or ethnicity while eating in the cafeteria.
- Refuse to listen or engage in demeaning ethnic jokes.
- Treat everyone with equal respect when having a conversation or interaction.
Appreciation:
- Ask yourself how your role at North Harris College contributes to student
learning.
- Participation in cultural events.
- Experience international culture through media, text and foreign cuisine.
