NHC Jazz Band

It is truly a banner year for the NHC Jazz Band. For the third time this year the band has won an outstanding performance trophy, this time at McNeese University in Lake Charles, La. The judges comments were the most complimentary the band has ever received. In addition to the band's performance award the following individuals were also recognized as outstanding musicians:

Lew Baker- tenor saxophone
Bryan Harlan- trombone
Vince Lujan- trombone
Joseph Russell- piano
Ben Black- guitar
Phillip Diaz- bass
Joe Jackson- drums

The North Harris College Jazz Band recently competed at the G.C.I.C. Jazz Festival at College of the Mainland in Texas City. Winning awards were:

Outstanding Overall Musicianship for the Festival: Brian Harlan - for trombone solo on Samba de los Gatos, and overall ensemble work

The Alpha Alpha Rho chapter of NHC attended the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society Convention in Orlando, Florida April 18-23rd. Phi Theta Kappa students from NHC who attended were as follows:

Forensics

Well, it's all over and I am happy to announce that North Harris College has had a very successful year! We recently attended two national speech tournaments and here are the results:

April 10, 2000

American Forensics Association (4-year college tournament):

Chris Sams and Derek Degeyter both advanced to the Semi-finals round in Dramatic Interpretation. This means that North Harris had two of the top 12 Dramatic Interps in the Nation. North Harris was the top community college in attendance.

Chris Sams won the Taylor-Collie Award Fellowship Award for Students - this award is voted on by the students at the tournament and given to the student for good sportsmanship and quality performances. (This is the third year in a row that a North Harris students has been given this award.)

Wade Hescht won the Taylor-Collie Fellowship Award for Coaches - once again the students at the tournament vote on a coach from any of the colleges in attendance.

Derek Degeyter and Chris Sams tied for the Bovero-Tabor Award - this award is given to the top overall speaker at the tournament (with 73 colleges in attendance). No Texas student has ever won this award.

North Harris College Gold Readers Theatre
North Harris College's Readers Theatre also won the Huffer Goldman Award - this is also voted on by the students at the tournament. It is given to the Readers Theatre that the competitors thought showed the best quality and sportsmanship. No Texas team has ever won this award.
