Library Cards

The North Harris Montgomery Community College District (NHMCCD) library card is necessary for borrowing books and other materials. Card privileges are not transferable. NHMCCD students must show a status of current enrollment to receive a card. High School students and adults who reside in the college district may apply for a card by showing a current school ID or driver's license.

Materials

Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC)

The OPAC terminals are located on both floors of the LRC. Books, government documents and audiovisual materials can be searched by such methods as author, title or subject. Montgomery County Public Library system materials are also included in the OPAC. The call number listed in the OPAC directs you to the physical location of an item. Using your library card number, a request for a book from another NHMCCD college or Montgomery County Public Library may be entered on the OPAC. Ask for assistance at the Reference or Circulation Desk.

CD-ROM Network

Databases on the CD-ROM network provide periodical article citations or full-text documents. Paper copies of network information may be printed. For extensive research, information may be downloaded to a scanned 3 1/2" high or double density disk. Since this data is saved in ASCII format, it is compatible with all word processing programs.

Reserve Materials

Books and other materials on reserve are at the Circulation Desk on the first floor. Reserve materials consist of class-assigned reading materials, selected text-books, non-print and special items. Patrons must submit a valid NHMCCD ID, library card or driver's license which will be held while these reserve materials are being used within the LRC. Most materials must be used in the LRC, but some may be checked out of the LRC for varying periods. Failure to return reserve materials on time will result in fines and holds being placed on patron records.

U.S. and Texas Documents

The North Harris College LRC serves as a selective depository for United States Documents. These documents may be found in paper, microfiche, or CD-ROM format on the second floor. Selected Texas Documents on microfiche are filed in a cabinet near the second floor hall exit. The OPAC lists most U. S. Documents and all Texas documents. Ask for assistance at the Reference Desk on the second floor.

Request Assistance

The Reference librarians on the second floor will give research assistance. The desk is staffed during the hours of LRC operation. Please do not hesitate to request assistance.

Nonprint

A collection of films, cassettes, video tapes, sound filmstrips and slides are available at the Kingwood, North Harris and Tomball College Campuses. Nonprint is available for in-house use, with the exception of audio cassette tapes which may be checked out. A maximum of two audio cassette tapes may be checked out for a one-week period.

Study Rooms

Rooms for small group study are available on a first-come-first-serve basis on the second floor. Persons working alone are requested to use the carrels and study tables on each floor. Please be advised that these rooms are not soundproof.

Quiet Area

A quiet area for reading and study has been designated on the second floor of the LRC. The area is located on the perimeter and in back of the circulating book stacks. Discussions with other patrons may be conducted in a quiet manner at other locations in the LRC. Thank you for your cooperation.

The Writing Center provides students with individualized tutoring in writing. Students can schedule an appointment or drop-in at posted times. The Writing Center also includes two computer classrooms that offer computer based instruction in English 0306, 0307, and 1301. To enroll in a computer-based writing class, students should consult their schedule of classes.

The Math Lab provides students with both tutoring and video instruction. No appointment is necessary. Students can drop by room A-251 to get help on current math homework.

Developmental Studies Resources provides resources for students who need to review basic concepts in writing, reading, or study skills. Resources include TASP study materials, vocabulary-building resources and other reading, writing, and study skills books, tapes, and videos. Students can also sign up for HUMD 0100, an independent study course designed to help students pass the TASP test.

The Open Computer Lab provides students with computers and computer assistance. No appointment is necessary. To find out about available software, come by room A-250.

The Fall and Spring semester hours are as follows:

Monday -- Thursday	7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Friday	7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Saturday	8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Sunday	1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m

COMPASS - a computerized academic placement test. It can be taken on a walk-in basis, is untimed, and gives immediate placement results.

Computerized TASP - a test for students who are in an emergency circumstance in which they are required to take the TASP test before they can register. Registration for the test is by telephone, 512-927-5100.

Advanced Placement Testing - tests for students who wish to receive credit by examination for courses in Automotive, Air Conditioning, Drafting, Electronics, and Welding.

Corresponding Testing - proctoring for other colleges and universities.

Alternate Classroom Testing - an alternative classroom for faculty, distance learning, and make up tests.

Special Needs Testing - modifies and adapts services to students with disabilities.
