North Harris College is committed to providing accessible educational opportunities to students with disabilities. Both the Americans with Disabilities Act and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act require postsecondary institutions to assure equal access for students with disabilities to all classes, labs, and activities. The Disability Services Office, located in A104, is available to assist the students and the faculty in working towards equitable access for all.

The Disability services offices includes Disability Services Counselors who specialize in working with students with disabilities, Interpreting/Captioning Services, The Assistive Technology Lab, and the Postsecondary Education Consortium Statewide Outreach and Technical Assistance Center.

Disability Services Counselors:

The counselors within the office coordinate accommodations for students with disabilities. Students are provided a checklist of accommodations to share with each professor. Accommodations may include services, such as interpreters or captionist for the deaf/hard of hearing (coordinated through Interpreter/Captioning Services), readers, scribes, or student assistants. Frequently, accommodations may include modification of the testing process. These modifications may include, but are not limited to, extended time for testing; tests in a separate room (usually the Assessment Center); or tests in an alternate format such as Braille, large print, taped. Interpreting/Captioning Services:

The Assistive Technology Lab:

The Assistive Technology Lab provides students with disabilities access to assistive technology and equipment. Types of technology that students may use include optical character recognition scanner/reader (reads print materials aloud); voice activated computers (allows students to dictate papers to the computer without using hands); closed circuit television (provide large print access); Braille; and personal amplification systems. Through the lab, students are trained in the use of this equipment, promoting accessibility of classes and labs. The lab also assists faculty in converting standard print materials to alternate formats (Braille, large print, taped) for tests, handouts, syllabi, etc. The AT Lab is located within the Learning Center, 281.618.5745 .
