Academic Disciplinary Procedures

The following policy applies to Upward Bound participants not meeting, the required 75% attendance of tutorials and services.

Step 1: Attendance Contract

Students not attending a minimum 75% of tutorials or services offered during an 18-week period (fall or spring session) will be required to complete an Attendance Contract. Attendance Contracts are signed agreements in which students commit to attend 75% of tutorials and services the following 18-week period.

Step 2: Attendance Probation

Students not complying with their Attendance Contract requirements will be placed on Attendance Probation. Students on Attendance Probation will have stipends withheld until they meet the 75% attendance requirement for a period of 18-weeks. Students meeting the attendance requirement will receive their stipends at the end of the 18-week period.

Step 3: Conditional Participation

Students not meeting the 75% attendance requirement for the 3rd consecutive term (2 18-week academic terms and 1 summer term), will be considered a Conditional Participant of Upward Bound. Student's attendance will be monitored for the next 18-week session. Conditional Participants do not earn a stipend but are still required to attend all tutorials and field trips. Upon meeting the 75% requirement, students will be fully accepted into the program the following session.

Step 4: Suspension

Students not meeting the 75% attendance requirement for the 4th consecutive term will be suspended from the Upward Bound program. Re-admittance is contingent upon approval by the Upward Bound Coordinator.

Disciplinary Procedure

The Upward Bound program is committed to helping students modify inappropriate behavior that may be detrimental to their well-being. Disruptive and offensive behavior, however, affects the success of other Upward Bound participants and therefore will not be tolerated. As such, the following disciplinary procedure will be applied:

STEP 1: VERBAL WARNING

Upon violation of any of the Upward Bound rules or those listed in the MacArthur High School Handbook, a student will receive a verbal warning.

STEP 2: WRITTEN WARNING

On the student's second offense or violation, he/she will receive a written warning and the student's parent will be informed of the violation. A copy of the written warning will be placed in the student's file.

STEP 3: SUSPENSION OF PRIVILEGES AND DISCIPLINARY CONTACT

After the third offense or rule violation, the student will have his or her privileges restricted which may include suspension from recreational activities, cultural field trips and Upward Bound workshops or denial/reduction of monthly stipend. Restrictions on privileges will occur on an individual basis. Additionally, the student is required to complete a Disciplinary Contract that defines the conditions that the student must abide by to remain in the Upward Bound program. A copy of the Disciplinary Contract will be sent to the student's parent/guardian.

STEP 4: PARENT CONFERENCE AND PROBATION

On the fourth offense or rule violation, the student and his or her parent must attend a conference to be held by the Upward Bound Coordinator. Student Disciplinary Contract will be reviewed and student's motivation in the Upward Bound program will be discussed. A student will be placed on probation from the Upward Bound program and his or her behavior will be closely monitored and activities limited by terms defined in conjunction with the parent/guardian, student and Coordinator. Probation is a notice that further offenses and rule violations may result in dismissal from the program.

STEP 5: DISMISSAL FROM UPWARD BOUND

After the fifth offense or rule violation, the student will be dismissed from the Upward Bound program. No appeals will be considered.

DEPENDING ON THE SEVERITY OF THE OFFENSE OR RULE VIOLATION, THE UPWARD BOUND STAFF RESERVES THE RIGHT TO CONDUCT STEP 1,2,3,4 AND 5 IMMEDIATELY.
