ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS
The success of Upward Bound relies upon regular attendance and participation during the academic year. Your participation is required in order to remain in good standing and to continue in the program.
ACADEMIC TUTORIAL
Students must attend two (2) hour per week of academic tutoring during the spring semester.
NORTH HARRIS COLLEGE PREP
Students must attend eight (8) hours of academic instruction per month held on the North Harris College campus. College Prep is typically held the first Saturday of each month.
STUDY SKILLS/PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOPS
Students must attend ten (10) hours of workshops during the spring semester. Each month students will be given a calendar of available workshops.
FIELD TRIPS
Field trips and other non-classroom educational experiences are an integral part of Upward Bound. All students are required to participate in all scheduled activities and field trips, unless previously excused by the program personnel.
All rules governing student behavior apply during field trips. Students must attend twelve (12) hours of cultural/educational field trips over the spring semester.
All Upward Bound participants must attend at least 75% of all meetings.
CLASS EXPECTATIONS
UB students are expected to display the following behavior in the classroom:
- Students are to bring their own notebook paper and a pen and pencil to each academic instruction or tutorial.
- Students are expected to be on time for all classes.
- Students are to remain in their classes during the full scheduled class time.
- Students are expected to cooperate fully with their teachers and tutors and to take an active, positive interest in class discussions and lectures.
- Students are expected to make up any work that is missed because of an absence. It is the student's responsibility to contact the instructor to inquire about make-up work.
- Students are to be alert and awake during class time.
- Students are not to bring food and drink in the classrooms.
- Radios, CD players, electronic games, cameras, video cameras or toys are not permitted in classrooms.
Failure to meet any or all of the above expectations will result in a disciplinary warning and/or partial loss of a student's stipend due to non-participation.
COLLEGE PREP
The Upward Bound College Prep is designed to provide students with a "college-going experience" and to build the skills and motivation necessary to succeed in high school and in college. The theme for this year's College Prep program is "Looking Back," exploring family and community pasts.
COLLEGE PREP ATTENDANCE
The Upward Bound College Prep begins promptly at 7:30 a.m. at the North Harris College campus. Students who arrive after 7:45 a.m. are considered tardy. Transportation will be provided from MacArthur High School to NHC at 7:00 a.m. All students are expected to attend monthly college prep Saturdays. Failure to do so may result in the dismissal of the student from the Upward Bound program.
Students are responsible for notifying an Upward Bound staff member prior to any absence. A message can be left on the UB pager at 713.608.0209 or
713.608.0445.
STUDENT BEHAVIOR DURING COLLEGE PREP
Since Upward Bound classes are designed to simulate college-level courses and a college atmosphere, students are expected to be on their best behavior at all times. Students must remember to keep the noise level to a minimum during class break. Please be considerate and keep noise down when going to class or changing classrooms. Remember other college students and professors are occupying these buildings as well. Students must remain on campus during class hours, unless a field trip is scheduled.
TARDY POLICY
Students are expected to be prompt to classes and meetings. A student is considered tardy if not in his or her assigned place at the scheduled time for class to begin. Tardiness results in unnecessary interruptions, delays and distractions for other students in the room. Disciplinary action will be taken for students with three (3) or more tardies.
Cutting classes will result in disciplinary action.
