LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - Students from North Harris College Upward Bound traveled to the Walt Disney World Resort July 17-18 to take part in two Disney Youth Education Series Programs (Y.E.S.). The group from Houston, TX learned about the rich history of the United States through the stories and setting of the attractions in Magic Kingdom Park's Liberty Square and Frontierland in the program, "The American Story." They also found out about career development and strategies for personal and professional success in "Career Discovery."
Each year, groups from around the world travel to Walt Disney World to take part in one of the several Disney Y.E.S. programs offered throughout the Resort. Most of the programs take place in and behind the scenes of the world famous Theme Parks.
Areas of study include career discovery, life management, physical science, natural science, history, art and humanities. The programs use the varied resources on stage and backstage to bring real world examples to the learning experience.
NHC's Upward Bound is a college preparatory program funded by the U.S. Department of Education. North Harris College has offered the UB program to Aldine Independent School District high school students since 1999. Participants receive a variety of services that build upon the necessary skills, which are needed for success in higher education and throughout life. Services include academic advising, tutorials, standardized test preparation and assistance with college admissions and financial aid. New participants must currently be in the 9th, 10th or 11th grade.
