On Saturday, Nov. 3, 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., enjoy great fall weather and explore bird watching with Gary Clark, North Harris College dean of Business, Social and Behavioral Sciences and weekly columnist for the Houston Chronicle's "Wonders of Nature." Clark is the former president of the Houston Audubon Society and founder of the Piney Woods Wildlife Society and the Texas Rare Bird Alert. The class meets at the Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge, Anahuac, Texas. Bring binoculars, a pocket note pad and any popular field guide. Also, there are limited refreshments and restrooms at the Visitor Information Center, so you will want to bring your own snacks and water. You may also want to bring sun screen and insect repellent. The closest convenience stores are at I-10 and Hwy 61, as well as a McDonalds, about 20 miles away. The class will meet at the Visitor Information Center located at the entrance of the refuge. Please arrive promptly.
To participate in this field trip, participants must register with North Harris College's Academy of Lifelong Learning (ALL) for a $15 fee, which covers a one-year membership into ALL. Members will continue to enjoy a wide-variety of classes being offered, such as this bird watching outing, throughout the year for free or very low supply cost, but residents must register in advance. ALL is geared toward adults 50 years young and above, but all ages are welcome to join. Directions to the Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge:
From Houston: Take I-10 East to Exit #812 (TX 61 or Anahuac/Hankamer exit). Travel south on 61 for nearly four miles to the stop sign. Continue straight through intersection. The road then becomes Hwy. 562. Continue for approximately 8.5 miles to the fork in the road, which dead ends into FM 1985. At the fork, turn left and continue for an additional 4 miles to the main entrance of the refuge. Turn right on the easement road for another 3 miles. Signs will be posted.
