Eight high school juniors and seniors from the North Harris College Upward Bound program recently attended the Southwest Association of Student Assistance Programs (SWASAP) student leadership conference at Sky Ranch in Van, Texas. Throughout the weekend, students interacted with regional high school and college participants to develop leadership and teamwork skills surrounding the conference theme “On the Edge—Looking Beyond the Horizon of Leadership.”
Upward Bound is a college preparation program and part of the TRIO programs funded by the U.S. Department of Education for high school students. North Harris College has offered the Upward Bound program to Aldine ISD high school students since 1999.
The far-reaching, meaningful effects of Upward Bound are well illustrated by NHC’s first graduating class from MacArthur High School in 2003. Approximately 34 percent of all MacArthur students pursue post-secondary education after high school. In the Upward Bound MacArthur Class of 2003, 91 percent enrolled in post-secondary education immediately following high school. In the 2006-07 school year, 69 percent were still enrolled, and 26 percent had earned certificates, associate’s degrees, or bachelor’s degrees.
