Finding Demographic Information
American Fact Finder - From the U.S. Census Bureau. The report Sex by age (total population) shows the number of children in various age groups.
Path: NHC Library Web page/ Government Information/ Federal Information/ Census/ American Fact Finder
  • On the left side bar, click Data Sets.
  • Select 2000 Summary File 1.
  • Click Detailed tables on the right.
  • To find information by Zip code: use the pull-down menu under geographic type and select 5-digit ZIP code tabulation area (the last item).
  • On the 3-digit ZIP CODE pull-down menu, select the FIRST THREE NUMBERS of your Zip code.
  • In the box below, scroll and select the complete FIVE DIGIT ZIP CODE.
  • Click add. If you make a mistake, click remove and select another.
  • [If you want to see a map, click map it. The map will open in a separate, smaller window.]
  • Click next.
  • Scroll in the list of tables and select the table that will give the kind of information you wish.
    Example:Sex by age (total population).
    There are tables for by ethnic groups, household tenure (ownership), average age, household size, etc.
  • Click add.
  • Click show result.
  • If printing is desired, use the print command on the upper right of the American Fact Finder database.

FREDI FOCUS Reports - Provides 2001 and projected 2006 population and land area by zip codes in the North Harris Montgomery College District. Reports for ethnicity, median age, and median incomes are also available.

ZIP Code Business Patterns - Shows the number of child day care centers in a particular zip code, categorized by number of employees. Under "Zip Code Business Patterns, enter a zip code and click go. Scroll to Health care and social assistance. Click detail and scroll down to child care.

Web Sites with Child Care Information
  • Texas Child Care - Links to licensing requirements of the Texas Department of Protective and Regulatory Services. Links to search for day care facilities. Use pull-down menu to select centers or home-based care. Web site gives description, inspection report results and much more.
    Note: In searching for centers, avoid entering too much information in the search boxes. The official name and address of a specific facility may be on record in a different form than the common name or way of writing the address.
  • Texas Early Childhood Education Coalition. This site will help you keep up with changes in the child care industry. It contains information from foundations, businesses, providers, universities, advocates, community groups, and organizations in Texas.
  • Center for Public Policy Priorities. Contains information on legislative issues relating to child care.
  • Collaborative for Children. This site has a special section for teachers and providers.
  • National Association for the Education of Young Children Contains information on accreditation standards.
  • United States Department of Labor - Contains information on federal labor laws regarding workers' rights, working conditions, minimum wages and overtime pay, freedom from employment discrimination, and unemployment insurance. Click Compliance Assistance in the upper right. Then, find the Major Laws link and explore by topic or in alphabetical order. The Wage and Hour Division has a Fact Sheet for Day Care Centers for general information.
  • ERIC-Contains digests of education-related documents and journal articles.
  • Locate other Web sites using the Google search engine.
    Sample search terms: day care business, child care business plan, child care licensing.
Locating Books and Videos
  • Connect to the Library Catalog on the NHC Library Web page.
  • Enter key words on your topic.
    Example: business plan
  • Look over results and click on title to see detailed record.
  • Scroll down to see location, collection call number, and status (check in, checked out).
  • To restrict search results, on the pull-down menu of the limit box, select North Harris College Library. Select Publication Date from the Sort menu to list most recent materials first. Click go.
  • To retrieve books from the shelf, write down complete call number. Request books from other libraries using bar code number on back of NHMCCD photo ID.
