Basic Track Program for Entry-level Students

Basic Track - General Information

The Lone Star College System offers a multiple entry/exit program of study in Associate Degree Nursing. The Professional Nursing Program (Basic Track) and the Transition Track for Articulating Students (LVN and Paramedic) lead to an Associate Degree in Nursing and eligibility to take the R.N. State Licensure Examination. The Professional Nursing Program and Transition Track for Articulating Students are accredited by the Board of Nurse Examiners (BNE) for the State of Texas. The National League for Nursing accredits both the RN and LVN tracks for Nursing.

Professional Nursing Program - Basic Track: Beginning nursing students are admitted in April and will begin their four sequential semesters of nursing courses in JulyAugust. Nursing courses are offered at four sites: Lone Star College-CyFair, Lone Star College-Tomball, Lone Star College-Montgomery, and Lone Star College-North Harris. About 220 students enroll in the class: 50 at Lone Star College-CyFair, 40 at Lone Star College-Tomball, 30 at Lone Star College-Montgomery, and 100 at Lone Star College-North Harris. Due to BNE mandated teacher/student ratios, students may be accepted at a campus other than the one to which they originally applied.

The Basic Track program is a full-time, day program. You will be in class/skills labs twice a week for approximately 4 hours per day between 8 a.m.-2 p.m. You will also practice your skills in a hospital for either a one day 10 hour clinical, or a two day clinical for 5 hours each day. Most clinicals are in the day but some are scheduled at night based on hospital availability. We can not guarantee which class, lab or clinical times, days will be available when you register. Lastly, you will have computerized exams on Friday mornings until ~12 p.m. Studying and projects require an additional time commitment.

Several exit options are available within the Professional Nursing Program track.

Option 1 - take the certification exam to become a CNA or CMA after Fall semester.

Option 2 - take the LVN licensure exam after completing Fall and Spring program classes and vocational nursing electives in the summer.

Students may choose to exit at these points and work, or continue in the Professional Nursing Program. Students who exit will have two years to apply for readmission to the Professional Nursing Program.

Students who are Certified Nursing Assistants, Emergency Medical Technicians, Certified Medical Assistants, Tech Prep students, and graduates of a high school health occupations program receive articulated credit for RNSG 1172, and enter directly into Nursing I.
