Engineering Design Graphics Technology

Working closely with local business certificates and degrees have been developed to prepare students for entry-level careers as engineering design technicians. Students may specialize in architectural engineering or metal building drafting and design.

Department Description

Students will learn the technical skills and knowledge to perform essential design layout, prepare supporting documentation, and finished engineering documentation for production in the engineering, construction, or manufacturing industries.

Engineering Design Graphics Technology

The Engineering Design Graphics program offers a one-year as well as three two-year associate of applied science degrees. The CAD Operator certificate program provides the skills for entry-level employment as a computer-aided drafter. The associate of applied science degree programs prepare the student for a career in design graphics, and provide the foundation for university study - should the student wish to further his or her education in engineering technology, architecture, or construction management. The Architectural Engineering Technology and Pre-Engineered Metal Building Drafting & Design degree programs prepare the student for careers within the architectural, construction or commercial steel building fabrication industries. The Mechanical Engineering Technology program prepares the student for employment within the product design and manufacturing industries.

North Harris College, in partnership with local engineering design films, provides co-op programs to help students develop an occupational, hands-on understanding of the area of study by working at the business while completing the college's degree requirements, The co-op program allows students to receive college credit for on-the-job training and offers the student the opportunity to gain valuable work experience demanded by employers.

The co-op program consists of a minimum of 20 hours of on-the-job training and a one-hour on-campus enrichment seminar each week. The student will receive three credit hours of college credit upon successful completion.

Engineering design graphics technicians are a major occupation in Texas, offering an average 445 annual openings per year and a growth rate which exceeds the state average. Each program offers an outstanding employment potential for the individual interested in building construction, or the design of residential, commercial, or industrial structures. Entry-level technicians can expect to earn from $23,775 to $29,000 their first year with an average $35,000 after year two.

Employment services are available to students and graduates for both part- and full-time, on- and off-campus employment through the career services office and a variety of programs and partnerships with are employers.
