Frequently Asked Questions
What is SI?
Supplemental Instruction is a program designed to provide non-remedial support to students enrolled in historically challenging courses. The program is implemented by the use of study groups where attendance is voluntary. The groups are led by student leaders, and the purpose of the study group sessions is to assist the students attending to develop study skills which are effective for success in the targeted courses.
Why participate in a voluntary program?
Studies have shown thar students can increase their grade in the course by at least a half to a whole grade higher than thosewho don't actively participate in the program. The study skills developed through attendance in the study groups can be applied to future courses the student will take.
How do the study groups operate?
Since participation is voluntary, no appointment is necesary to join the study groups but being on time is essential. Students need to stay through the entire session which will be fifty minutes to an hojr long. The session time are listed in the credit course schedule or will be determined during the first week of class. There will be one session per each class meeting, and attendance will be taken for statistical purposes. The course content will be addressed in the context of development of the study skills, but the content won't always be the focus of the entire session. The participants will be encouraged to process the content materials by using the activities and skills facilitated during the study group sessions.
