Overview  

 English as a Second Language [ESL]

Depending on student needs and interests, the ESL Program offers the following courses:

  • 6 levels of Grammar and Writing
  • 6 levels of Listening and Speaking
  • 3 levels of Academic Reading and Vocabulary Development
  • 4 levels of Conversation
  • 4 levels of Grammar
  • 2 levels of Pronunciation 
  • 2 levels of Public Speaking

TOEFL Preparation

Online Courses

Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults [CELTA] Classes are offered in various formats: 

  • Intensive 8-week classes meet 5 times a week during the day.
  • 16-week classes meet 2 times a week, days or evenings.
  • Conversation and Grammar courses meet 2 times a week, evenings. In addition, students can choose from a wide variety of materials from our Multi-Media Resource Center for additional language study using computers, videos, and audiocassettes.

Modern Languages

In order to facilitate second language needs, CIEL offers courses in the following languages:

  • Chinese
  • Japanese
  • French
  • Spanish

NAFTA Spanish Language Certificate

To earn a certificate, students complete the following courses:

  • Spanish Conversational I-IV
  • Spanish for Business
  • NAFTA Spanish Studies

Test Preparation and Testing Services

CIEL prepares participants to present the Texas Oral Proficiency Test [TOPT] and/or the Spanish Speaking Test [SST], and provides testing services to evaluate the language proficiency skills of students and area business employees seeking bilingual certification.

American Sign Language [ASL]

CIEL provides a unique opportunity for personal and professional growth by offering courses in

  • Fingerspelling
  • Conversational American Sign Language
  • Interpreter Training Certificate Program
  • Interpreter Training Workshop Series

Sign Language Interpreter Training Certificate Program

The Interpreter Training Program prepares graduates for entry-level careers as American Sign Language/English Interpreters.

Interpreter Training Workshop Series

Professionals in the field present a series of workshops every semester in response to the needs of certified interpreters for professional development and life-long learning.
