Open Recreation Information

OPEN REC GENERAL GUIDELINES:

  1. Academic classes, ecreational sports tournaments, and Community Education programs have priority in all areas of the facilities.
  2. A college photo ID or community membership card is required for all individuals who use the facility. Memberships for student, faculty/staff family and individual community memberships may be obtained through the Recreational Sports Office, HPE-106.
  3. Recreational Sports staff will be responsible for maintaining a safe environment in all facilities during open recreation hours. All workers have been trained to handle emergencies, answer questions, report complaints and solve routine problems.
  4. All students, faculty and staff must abide by all policies established for the use of the facilities. Participants are expected to be responsible, courteous and respectful of other participants and staff. Failure to comply with the rules and regulations of the facility may cause a user to lose program privileges.
  5. Proper dress is required at all times. Gym shoes must be worn by all participants. clothing that is not worn during activity such as sweats, jackets and/or hats are not allowed in the activity areas. Lockers are provided in dressing rooms to store all personal belongings.
  6. Clothing with exposed rivets or zippers are not allowed.
  7. A shirt must be worn at all times.
  8. Any jewelry worn must be that which does not pose a danger to self or other participants. Staff members have the authority to instruct participants to remove any jewelry that is perceived as dangerous.
  9. Physical or verbal abuse will not be tolerated.
  10. No food or drinks will be allowed in activity areas.
  11. The use of tobacco, alcohol or drugs in any form is prohibited in all areas.
  12. Gum chewing is not allowed in any activity area.
  13. No dunking or hanging on rims allowed.
  14. All injuries must be reported to staff immediately. An accident report will be filled out and a determination will be made as to further care or assistance.
  15. North Harris College is not responsible for injuries or accidents that may occur during recreation hours or participation in other recreational activities sponsored by the department.
  16. No children are allowed unless they are a part of a membership and only during youth hours posted.

Weight Room
There are high risk factors that are associated with improper practices in the weight room area. For this reason, the following regulations must be used:

  1. All participants must wear full T-shirts. No sleeveless t's, sports bras or tank tops. NO EXCEPTIONS!
  2. Blue jeans and clothing with zippers are not allowed.
  3. Spotters are mandatory for all lifts using squat, incline, or bench press racks.
  4. All weights must be re-racked after use.
  5. Belts are not to be worn.

Racquetball Courts
Due to the limited amount of courts, a reservation procedure will be in effect in the event of overcrowding. Court reservations can be made up to 24 hours in advance for use. Reservations may be made by calling the Recreational Sports Office at 281-618- 5659 or stopping by HPE-106. All individuals must show a facility pass to secure a court.
*Protective eye guards are MANDATORY!

Incidents:

All users must comply with the policies and procedures in place for the facility. Those who show a lack of cooperation inadhering to the rules governing equipment, participation, dress code, smoking, and conduct will cause administrative action or disciplinary action to be executed.

PUBLIC USE OF RECREATIONAL FACILITIES

The Department of Recreational Sports welcomes the community for their recreational activities. If anyone would like to schedule an event using our facilities, stop by HPE-106 to get more information on how to go about doing so. A scheduling contract form must be completed and all organizations will need to provide proof of insurance.

NOTE: Neither North Harris College nor the Department of Recreation Sports provides medical insurance coverage for participants in any of its programs.

Participation in all intramural and Recreational Sports Programs is completely voluntary. Individuals participate at their own risk and assume responsibility for their own health and safety. North Harris College and the Department of Recreational Sports are not liable for injuries sustained during participation in any of its programs.

A physical is recommended for people over the age of 40.

Facilities Include:
Gymnasium Equipped for table tennis, volleyball, basketball, pickleball, badminton and other innovative activities.
Racquetball courts - 4 courts plus a set-up for wallyball.

 

Weight room - Equipped with up-to-date Nautilus machines, bicycles, stair climbers, treadmill and free weights.

Bike room -Equipped with exercise cycles, test cycles, recumbent cycle, free weights and treadmill
Tennis courts - 8 outdoor lighted courts

Intramural Fields - Fields are for multi-purpose use including soccer, softball and flag football.

Jogging Path - A safe 1.2 mile area designated for walking, jogging and running.

Intramural Program

The North Harris College Recreational Sports staff welcomes all students, faculty and staff to participate in a variety of activities offered through the Intramural Sports program. Our program is designed to match equally skilled teams in various activities to meet physical, as well as recreational, needs. Participants have the opportunity to make up their own teams from friends, classmates, etc. If you can't form a team, enter as an individual and a guarantee of placement will be made.

Team, individual and dual sports will be scheduled for each semester. Be sure to check the bulletin boards throughout the campus for events that will be offered. Schedule of events may also be obtained by stopping by the Recreational Sports Office in the HPE building, room 106.

Eligibility

  1. All students, faculty and staff of the North Harris Montgomery Community College District are eligible to participate in Intramural Sports.
  2. The intramural sports staff will assume responsibility for investigation of the eligibility of all participants upon request. A college ID or recreation card will be required during all activities.
  3. In order for an individual to be considered eligible for intramural competition, his/her name and social security number must appear on the team roster. Changes in a roster must be made at least 24 hours prior to the scheduled game.
  4. There will be no roster changes allowed during any playoff or championship game.
  5. Players who have participated with one intramural team are not eligible to play for another team in that sport. Exception: Individuals may play in both the men's or women's program plus a co-rec team.

Ineligibility

  1. Any person participating in an intramural activity found to be ineligible will be suspended from that activity for the remainder of the season.
  2. Any team using an ineligible player shall forfeit all games in which the ineligible player participated.
  3. All players participating in a game/match using an ineligible player, with an assumed name, shall be suspended from that activity for the remainder of the season and placed on probation the remainder of t school year.

Forfeit Policy
A team will be dropped from competition upon announcement of their second forfeit. The winning team must record its lineup for the forfeited game and must have at least a minimum of the official number of players. If neither team or individual shows for a game, both will be charged with a loss by forfeit.

Protests
Protests involving rule interpretations will be considered, but judgement calls will not receive consideration. Protests must be made on the field or court immediately following the incident in question. The game is suspended and the Intramural Supervisor will be called to the game. Play should not continue until a final decision is made. Protests concerning eligibility must be made before, during or immediately after the contest in question. A ruling will then be made by the Intramural Sports Director the following day.

Conduct of Participants

  1. Good sportsmanship is vital to the conduct of every contest. Officials, supervisors, and administrative personnel shall make decisions as to warn, penalize, or eject players and/or teams for poor sportsmanship. These decisions are final. The team coach or captain is responsible for the actions of any individual member of the team and for spectators directly related to said team.
  2. Deliberate injury or deliberate attempt to injure an opponent will result in automatic suspension from all intramural activity for at least one year.
  3. Fighting will result in automatic suspension from all intramural activities for a minimum of at least one semester. Any attempt to instigate an altercation will be considered a fight.
  4. Harassment and verbal abuse of officials or intramural staff will result in ejection from the game. It can also result in a lifetime suspension from all intramural sports activity

Sports Clubs

 

Sport Clubs and Recreation Organizations - These are registered student organizations which exist to promote and develop interest in a particular activity. They operate with an emphasis on student leadership and group participation. In order to join or start a sport or recreation club, contact the Recreational Sports Office, HPE-106

Sport Clubs and Recreation Organizations are registered student organizations which exist to promote and develop interest in a particular activity. They are created and run by student volunteers who seek instruction, recreation, competition and social activities at levels not provided through recreational sports, physical education classes or intercollegiate athletics. Sport Clubs and Recreation Organizations operate with an emphasis on student leadership and group participation.

Sport Clubs compete in leagues against other collegiate clubs. All members must be North Harris Montgomery Community College District students, carry medical insurance and must sign a waiver of responsibility agreement. Recreation Organizations are far less structured and geared more for the enjoyment of the activity.

Potential sport clubs and recreation organizations must complete necessary registration forms with the Student Activities Department in order to become a registered student organization. In addition, a student representative must meet with the Recreation Sport Coordinator to review requirements, guidelines, club statues and responsibilities. As a registered organization, one must follow the policies and procedures as outlined by the College, the Student Activities Department and the Recreational Sports Department.

Other Programs OfferedGCIC Sports Day Events - This event is a fun-filled day at a host College competing in a variety of sports such as volleyball, basketball, racquetball, table tennis, tennis, bowling, golf, billiards and softball. Watch for flyers with times, dates and events.

Special Events - Each semester there will be special events planned that is open to all students, faculty and staff. During the Fall and Spring the HPE and Recreational Sports Departments hold a 3 mile run/walk. Also in the Spring, there will be an All-Niter. For more details on these and other special events, contact the Recreational Sports Office, HPE-106.

Public Use of Facilities

The following facilities may be used by the Community at no charge:

Tennis Courts

North Harris College has 8 courts that are managed by the Department of Recreational Sports. These courts may be used during designated Recreational Sports times. Academic classes and Intramural activities have priority and are not to be interrrupted for recreational use. Reservations can be made in advance by contacting the Department of Recreational Sports Office. Reservations are limited to one full semester for organized events.

Court Policies:

  1. Court usage will be limited to 4 players per court
  2. No glass containers allowed
  3. No loud music
  4. No bicycles or skates allowed
  5. Private lessons must be authorized by the Recreational Department
  6. No children allowed, unless they are participants and are supervised by an adult(18 and over)
  7. The collection of admission fees or the sale of any item is prohibited

Intramural Fields

These fields are for multi-purpose use including soccer, softball and flag football. Reservations may be made by contacting the Department of Recreational Sports Office. Academic classes and Intramural activities have priority at all times.

Field Policies:

  1. Fields should be used for sports and free play.
  2. Fields are for College and community use.
  3. The Department reserves the right to cancel play in inclement weather or any situation which jeopardizes the safety of individuals or field care.
  4. Vehicles, including motorcycles, are not permitted on the fields.
  5. Cleanup of fields, sidelines and immediate parking area is required after use.
  6. Any medical emergencies or medical problems should be reported immediately to the Department and Campus Police. An incident report must be filled out.
  7. The collection of admission fees or the sale of any item is prohibited.

The use of the gymnasium, racquetball courts, classrooms and all other recreational facilities must be approved by the Vice President of Administrative Services. Rental Fees will be calculated and permission granted on an individual basis. North Harris College reserves the right to refuse any organization or individual from using its facilities.

General Guidelines for public use

  1. All groups must follow all NHC policies and procedures, as well as any applicable federal, state, or local laws.
  2. The possession or consumption of alcohol and/or drugs are prohibited in all recreation areas.
  3. The use of tobacco is prohibited inside all buildings.
  4. All users of the Recreational Sports facilities are expected to be responsible, courteous, and safety conscious at all times. Disorderly conduct will not be tolerated, and violators will be subject to arrest.
  5. No Horseplay is permitted.
  6. Facility supervisors have full authority to ask participants to leave the facility if the participant's conduct is unacceptable. Failure to abide by the rules and regulations established by the Department may cause a facility user to lose its privileges.
  7. No food or drink is allowed in the facilities except in lobby areas, and all waste shall be disposed of properly.
  8. Proper clothing is required for specific areas to insure the safety of participants and longevity of equipment and facilities.
  9. All injuries should be reported to a HPE supervisor immediately. The staff will fill out an accident report and determine if further care or assistance is required. Emergencies occurring within the HPE building or outside facilities should be reported to any NHC employee available.

Injuries and their resulting costs are the responsibility of the participant. North Harris College is not responsible for injuries incurred while using our facilities. Each participant/organization is advised to carry personal health and accident insurance.
