Application to Advanced Coursework in EMS Professions

Students must make formal application to the EMSP Program to pursue coursework beyond the EMT-Basic level (EMSP 1501/1160). Applicants who are currently certified at the EMT-Basic or EMT-Intermediate level or have completed EMSP 1501 (EMT-Basic) and EMSP 1160 (EMT-Basic Clinical) but who do not yet hold EMT-Basic certification may be accepted, with the provision that they obtain EMT-Basic certification prior to beginning the first paramedic clinical assignment.

An official application portfolio can be downloaded (.pdf file), obtained in Winship 174, or by calling the EMSP Program at 281-618-5781. The application must be submitted prior to July 31st preceding the fall semester for which admission is desired. The portfolio must include:

  1. A completed application for admission, including an application essay.
  2. Documentation of high school graduation or a GED.
  3. Copies of all relevant academic transcripts: high school, college or university, military service schools, and other (proprietary schools).
  4. A resume or curriculum vitae showing work history with an emphasis on EMS or other health care experience.
  5. Documentation of EMT-Basic certification. Students who currently are enrolled in an EMT Basic course or who have completed EMT-Basic course work and are engaged in the credentialing process should provide a statement to this effect.
  6. Results of the Department’s entrance examination. To be considered for admission an applicant must achieve a minimum score of 70 on this examination. One retest will be permitted. Students who have recently completed EMSP 1501 within one year may substitute their final exam score.
  7. Tests score demonstrating the prerequisite knowledge level as required in the current college catalog for EMSP courses. Contact an advisor in the Counselling Office to reveiw your scores.
  8. Verification of immunization against tetanus, diphtheria, mumps, measles, rubella and hepatitis B.
  9. Negative results from a tuberculosis skin test (Manatoux) or chest x-ray performed within the last 6 months.
  10. Proof of successful completion of the American Heart Association’s Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers, or an equivalent course approved by the Program Director, within the previous year.
  11. A signed waiver declaring past history of Chicken Pox or proof of vaccination.
  12. Students may be subject to a criminal background check.

After a completed application portfolio is on file, a counseling session with one or more members of the EMS faculty will be scheduled. Letters regarding admission status will be mailed within two weeks of this meeting.

Admission and Selection Criteria of Candidates

EMS Professions students are admitted for advance coursework every fall semester. If there are more applicants who meet the admission criteria than space will allow, applicants will be ranked for placement in the class. Ranking for placement will be based on a point system for:

  • 1 year full time or 2 years part time or volunteer service in EMS; or relevant military experience
  • Employment by clinical affiliates
  • EMT-I, RN, PA, EMT-P, LP, DO, MD.
  • BIOL 2401 or equivalent
  • BIOL 2402 or equivalent
  • 1-10 completed college credits (excluding BIOL 2401, 2402)
  • 11-20 completed college credits
  • 21-30+ completed college credits
  • Per College Grade Point (Example: 3.5 GPA = 3.5 Points)

Additional Immunization Information

Diphtheria and Tetanus: Must be within the past 10 years.

Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR): Student must show proof of two immunizations for measles and one for mumps and rubella. Physician diagnosis of disease or positive serologic study for measles/mumps/rubella antibodies will suffice. Students who submit proof of date of birth prior to 1/1/57 are not required to provide MMR immunization records.

Tuberculin Skin Test (PPD): Must be within the past 6 months and renewed annually. If positive, students must submit chest X-ray interpretation and signed note from the physician stating that the student is eligible for clinical practice and free of disease at this time.

Program Progression and Course Grading

Progression from one semester to the following semester(s) requires successful completion of all EMSP and clinical course requirements. To successfully complete an EMSP semester and to be eligible to receive a course completion certificate, students must achieve a passing score of 70% in each course and on each final course exam. Students who do not score a 70% or better on a final course exam will be given the opportunity for one retest if their course grade is passing. The retest will not affect the course grade. Students must score 70% or better on the retest to continue in the program.

Withdrawal from or failure of any EMSP course in the program will prevent the student from continuing into the next semester of the EMSP Program. The student will need to resubmit an application portfolio at another date.
