College offers a variety of payment options to students wanting to attend college this fall

So, you forgot to send in those scholarship applications last spring, but you still want to attend college this fall. How are you going to pay for your classes? Well, if you choose North Harris College, there are a variety of payment options to help you get started in classes this fall.

“Although we recommend students apply for scholarships, grants and loans at least six months in advance, the reality is most do not,” says Ken Feld, North Harris College’s financial aid director. “My job is to help students wanting to attend college clear the first hurdle - the financial one. As the fall semester gets closer, most scholarship deadlines have ended - but the college has a system to help students pay for this year’s fees and then tries to guide them towards applying early for next year’s scholarship opportunities.”

The following is a list of last minute payment options available to students who register for classes at North Harris College for the fall 2002 term. Each option includes an office to contact and a telephone number for additional information.

North Harris College accepts cash, checks or credit cards (MasterCard, Visa and Discover). For those students who find it inconvenient to drive to the college during normal business hours, there is an after hours payment drop-slot located outside of the NHC business office where payments by check or credit card can be made (no cash please). Credit card payments can also be made directly over the phone during normal business hours. Making your payment by the tuition deadline date will ensure that your classes will not be cancelled. For more information, please contact the North Harris College business office,
suite A-103 at 281-618-5474.

A deferred payment plan is also available and designed to assist students with NHC financial aid options who cannot pay the entire tuition and fee cost by the deadline. The program covers up to 50 percent of the tuition and fee costs for credit classes that are a full semester in length. There is a $20 non-refundable service fee payable at the time the agreement is set up. For dates and times of availability, call the NHC business office at 281-618-5474.

Students can also apply for student financial aid grants. These grants are approved by the college and provided by the federal, state or North Harris College sources. To receive these grants, a student must have completed the Free Application for Federal Student Aid 2002-2003 (www.fasfa.ed.gov <http://www.fasfa.ed.gov>) and submit their other paperwork to the financial aid office. Students are encouraged to apply throughout the year. Students are initially responsible for all tuition and fees, but if found eligible for the grant, the student may receive a reimbursement. Please contact NHC’s financial aid office,
suite A-101, 281-618-5464.

The college also offers students financial aid through short-term loans. These programs help students who have applied for financial aid late in the summer and are not prepared to pay for their direct educational expenses. These programs are based on the student’s anticipated future eligibility for federal or state grants and covers tuition, fees and/or books. Deadlines for short-term loans are quickly approaching. To find out dates and times of availability, call the financial aid office at 281-618-5464.
