Basic Computer Skills and Competencies Exam

Students who wish to receive credit by examination for Basic Computer Skills and Competencies may pick up this form from the Counseling Office, a Business Division secretary in Winship 105 or 115, or the Assessment Center in Winship 156.

Requirements for Testing

  1. Students must be enrolled in the North Harris Montgomery Community College District at the time exam is administered.

Steps to Take Basic Computer Skills Competencies Exam

  1. Fill in name, date, and Social Security Number on this Form.
  2. During posted testing hours, go to Assessment Center (Winship 156) with a photo ID and a #2 pencil and a Scantron Form 9 19641 purchased from the Bookstore.
  3. Test must be completed at one sitting and cannot be retaken. Since test may take up to two hours, students should arrive early enough to complete testing by the closing time.
  4. Exam has two parts: multiple-choice questions on computer literacy, and a hands-on, computer skills section on Microsoft Windows 95. Word, Excel, and Access.
  5. Complete the multiple-choice questions listing your answers on the Scantron form provided.
  6. You will receive a floppy disk with a word file, and an instruction sheet. Save hands-on exercises to the floppy disk. Turn in Scantron, Window 95 worksheet, and floppy disk along with this form (Be sure to use a PC with office 97 installed)
  7. Your test will be sent to the Computer Information Systems Department (CSCI) where it will be graded. You will receive a grade of P (pass) or F (fail). A passing grade will be reported to the Counseling Office. Allow for a week for your results. These will be available from the CSCI department secretary, Room 105 in Winship.
  8. Advanced Placement Credit for CSCI 1401 can not be taken if this exam has been attempted.
