Service Learning is a teaching method which combines community service with academic instruction as it focuses on critical, reflective thinking and civic responsibility. Service Learning programs involve students in organized community service that addresses local, global and multicultural needs, while developing their academic skills, sense of civic responsibility, and commitment to the community.
Officially, service learning began at NHMCCD with the establishment of a district committee in 2001. Service Learning was offered as an instructional methodology in fall 2002. This initiative has been developed and led by the NHMCCD faculty and each college has adapted the program to meet the needs of students and community partners. Most of the colleges have a faculty coordinator who acts as a resource for the faculty members interested in using service learning. The district has sponsored numerous seminars and workshops on service learning.
The benefits of service learning include enriched academic learning, networking opportunities, career exploration, occupational skills, social awareness, self-esteem, problem solving skills, working as a team, and enhanced ethical and moral development.

North Harris College
The strength of the North Harris College service learning program is its impact on the community. As a part of North Harris' diverse program, students have provided tools and information for flood control planning, assisted seniors with tax planning, and volunteered with hospice, to name a few. Presently, the growing program supports approximately 150 students who in spring 2006, rendered over 2,000 community service hours.
Our Future
The future of service learning is bright for NHMCCD. As each college strives to build successful programs, local community partners are reaping the benefits of faculty and student involvement. NHMCCD is poised to become a leader in the region, already providing valuable training and consultation to various groups. Our continued involvement with Texas Campus Compact, the American Association of Community Colleges, and the Community College National Center for Community Engagement will ensure our development of service learning as a teaching method. NHMCCD will remain committed to building a culture of collaboration by teaching its students to learn by doing.
