STRATEGIC PLAN 2004-2009
VISION STATEMENT:

North Harris College will be the center of learning and culture in our community by becoming the college of first choice for all learners.


MISSION STATEMENT:
We at North Harris College will provide a comprehensive community college that is the preferred choice for higher education and workforce training. We will provide a supportive educational environment for people transferring into baccalaureate degree programs, for people preparing for an occupation, and for people in the workforce seeking to enhance their knowledge and skills. We will offer educational programs leading to associate degrees, certificates, and continuing education credits. We will offer educational programs and services that are flexible, adaptable, and accessible through partnerships with the community and through the use of computer technology.

GOALS:

GOAL I. By responding to changing educational goals of learners, current programs will continue to facilitate learning; new program development will be continuous and systematic.

  • Develop program offerings to become the college of choice for our diverse student population
  • Expand program offerings – community education, academic, developmental and work force - to meet emerging educational needs
  • Increase community and service learning projects
  • Create more job re-training programs
  • Increase business partnerships in the development of course offerings
  • Increase an international perspective in learning activities

GOAL II. The college faculty and staff will strengthen relationships with our diverse population of learners, community businesses and school districts.

  • Foster post-secondary education in the Hispanic community
  • Strengthen community partnerships in our district
  • Strengthen partnerships with businesses in our district
  • Provide bilingual or multilingual communications in publications and campus signs
  • Make NHC the center of community activity
  • Build educational bridges with state, national and international organizations

GOAL III. Learning will be improved through 1.) continuous attention to structural renovation and state-of-the art equipment for instruction, and 2.) accessibility to a safe and comfortable environment.

  • Renovate facilities with state-of-the-art equipment and construction for better support of programs
  • Create comfortable and accessible learning facilities
  • Create a safe and secure learning environment

GOAL IV. Organizational infrastructures will foster a culture of evidence by systematically developing processes for internal communication.

  • Identify goals of NHC learners
  • Create internal tracking programs to measure learner success and progress toward goals
  • Expand shared information with external resources such as senior colleges and businesses
  • Improve coordination of educational offerings between CE and credit
  • Improve communication system with all college constituencies
  • Create a pleasant first encounter for each student, and continue efforts to streamline all registration processes including assessment, counseling, advising, and financial aid

GOAL V. Building on our intense marketing, we will work to build a clear and compelling picture of the learning environment at the college.

  • Create a clear definition for North Harris College within our community
  • Build employee, community and student pride in our college
  • Build a positive environment for students, employees and the community
  • Build student life on campus
  • Integrate community needs into the college

GOAL VI. Expand training and development for faculty and staff to maximize the effectiveness of teaching and learning.

  • Create programs for facilitating excellence in employee training and development
  • Hire and retain skilled faculty and staff
  • Strive toward full-time faculty instruction for 60% of the sections of credit courses

GOAL VII. Improve the use of information technology by aligning technology with the mission of teaching and learning.

  • Form a Technology Advisory Council to help the college community shape the use of technology
  • Complete a detailed assessment of our current capabilities
    * Infrastructure (switches, routers and security)
    * Servers and applications
    * Library, desktop computers, labs, computer classrooms, and active classrooms
  • Adopt a 5-year Strategic Plan for Information Technology that::
    * Identifies current problems,
    * Establishes clear goals for the future,
    * Communicates the direction of information technology on campus and in the District,
    * Establishes hardware replacement goals,
    * Establishes best practices in the industry,
    * Identifies long term objectives in coordination with District goals, and
    * Has clear measures and benchmarks.
  • Improve the on-line registration system
  • Improve the use and quality of data throughout the college to meet the specific needs of all instruction and support areas
