Geoscience Technology Training Center

The Geoscience Technology Training Center (GTTC) is a one-of-a-kind educational facility located at the North Harris Community College District Office in Houston, Texas. It consists of a dynamic alliance between the college, business community, and geoscientists, which is dedicated to the cost-effective and timely establishment and enhancement of UNIX- and PC-based workstation skills necessary in today's exploration and production market. In addition, the GTTC provides education and work skill improvement in GIS technologies, Oracle, Linux, and UNIX fundamentals and system administration. This program has a proven track record of providing work skills improvement through education to Geoscience professionals. For many geoscientists the Geoscience Technology Training Center is the only affordable means of obtaining this professional training.

Educational Goals
Since its inception in 1992 the goals of the GTTC have been: To provide advanced, publicly accessible, and cost effective UNIX- and PC-based interactive workstation training through credit and community education courses designed to cover a wide range of industrial needs. To provide continued access to hardware and software for current and former students in order to prevent the loss of newly acquired technical skills. To maintain a dynamic partnership between businesses, professional societies, government, and the college in order to improve technical training. To expand and modify course offerings based upon improved workstation technology and the evolving needs of the Geoscience community and industry. To provide technical certification programs in Geoscience and related industries. To provide a proving ground for new software development and technology in an "open systems" network environment

Student Population
The facility now offers over 40 different UNIX and PC courses, and has trained over 2800 Geoscience professionals who average approximately 20 years of experience. These professionals have the option of continual access to the facility's software and hardware. In addition to Texas the facility also serves geoscientists nationwide including participants from Louisiana, Oklahoma, Colorado, Mississippi, Minnesota, New Mexico, Alaska, and Wisconsin. Internationally, the GTTC has educated individuals from Indonesia, Venezuela, Holland, Korea, and Great Britain. The GTTC provides training through Community Education for individuals who require UNIX- based and/or PC-based workstation training in order to obtain improved or permanent positions within corporations or as consultants. In addition, the Center provides a cross-professional series of courses designed to provide Oracle Certification preparation training for career paths in a broad spectrum of industries, including city-regional planning, medical, environmental, real estate, and service industries.
