Oracle Programming: Basic SQL/SQL*plus

Students will develop an understanding of relational databases and become familiar with data modeling and database design. The basics of Structured Query Language (SQL) and how to query and display data using SQL in an Oracle RDBMS will be explained and demonstrated through lecture and extensive hands-on exercises. Textbook required (Oracle 9i, The Complete Reference) Prerequisites: NONE. A basic understanding of data processing concepts and techniques will be helpful, but is not required.
Oracle Programming: Adv SQL/SQL*plus

Students will learn Oracle SQL*Plus commands, how to create scripts, and how to set up the test environments. Each student will then execute SQL using a workstation attached to an Oracle database. Advanced SQL techniques including joins, drops, and the creation of tables will also be covered in this class, in addition to use of Oracle's Data Dictionary. Perl Programming, Introduction

Students will develop basic programming skills in the Perl computer language with emphasis on basic data types, mathematical expressions, string handling, regular expressions and control logic. Includes standard and special file input/output, sorting, linear and associative arrays as well as basic reporting operations. Oracle Advanced SQL or equivalent knowledge is recommended prior to enrolling. Topics address recently identified current events, skills, knowledge, and/or attitudes and behaviors pertinent to the technology or occupation and relevant to the professional development of the student. Introduction to Linux

This beginner-level, hands-on course will introduce students to the fundamentals of the Linux OS. The basic Linux commands, file system structure and navigation, file manipulation, file permissions and ownership, and editing of text files will be discussed. ArcView: GIS Basics

ArcView GIS is a very popular and powerful computer mapping and information management and analysis system with applications in every industry and business sector. GIS technology is used to visualize mappable data over time to discover and analyze patterns and trends, improve resource management, and enhance and streamline decision-making, operations, and productivity. This course involves the use of a computer workstation and the appropriate software to introduce the terminology, capabilities, and potential uses of computerized geographical information systems. Students will locate, load, and organize relevant data; create, display, edit, associate, and query spatial, tabular, and graphical data and images; create and edit shape files; generate, edit, and analyze maps; and create customized presentation layouts. Workstation Interpretation
3D Geological Modeling & Visualization

Students will learn the theory, principles and methods of PC-based 3D modeling utilizing Dynamic Graphic's Earth Vision software. Participants will utilize various subsurface datasets to construct models using geologic rules with a workflow manager. The student will learn critical modeling processes while maintaining a primary focus on the Geoscience aspects of the model. Participants will gain skills required to convert typical 2D interpretations into enhanced 3D interpretations. Class notes provided.
GESXplorer Basics

GESXplorer, the newest version of the comprehensive GeoGraphix Exploration System (GES) software package, allows the geoscientist to integrate cartographic, well, seismic, production, and lease data into a single mapping environment on a PC. This course involves the use of a computer workstation and the appropriate software to generate maps of geophysical and geological data. Topics include mapping coordinate systems, projection types, importing data files, gridding, basemap generation, contouring, editing, and display techniques. Exercises and discussions will also include project and area of interest creation, data management, creating and editing structure and isopach maps, generating cross sections, viewing layers in 3D, and producing and editing montages. Students will become familiar with the LandNet, WellBase, IsoMap, GeoAtlas, and Xsection modules and utilities in GESXplorer, and will integrate selected data from SeisVision, PRIZM, and LeaseMap. This course deals with the interpretation of geological data using a UNIX workstation and Landmark StratWorks software. Topics will include the use of well logs and log correlation, construction of cross-sections, mapping of geological data, horizon interpretation, and map editing. Class notes provided.
Landmark: StratWorks Special Topics

This course consists of 16 hours of additional training in the areas of well data interpretation and well data loading. It is available to experienced StratWorks users and also to those who have attended basic Landmark StratWorks at the GTTC. Well data and 3-D seismic provided by the Texas Bureau of Economic Geology (BEG) is utilized. Attendees can select from a full range of topics that include aspects of the software that usually are not covered or have only limited coverage in basic StratWorks. This course will also provide students the ability to refresh their skills in basic StratWorks as well. Class notes provided.

Hampson-Russell: AVO ANALYSIS

This course deals with Amplitude Variation with Offset (AVO) analysis on pre-stack seismic data. While theory is covered to provide the basis for the technology, the course emphasis is on the application of AVO analysis in a work environment. Topics addressed will include AVO feasibility studies, identification of AVO anomalies in seismic data, AVO interpretation through analysis of models and real seismic, and AVO pitfalls. Techniques utilized include ray-trace/wave-equation forward modeling to create synthetic cdp gathers, fluid-substitution modeling in target zones, and the calculation, crossplotting, and mapping of AVO attributes. The software for the course will be the Hampson-Russell AVO package and the dataset utilized consists of both 2D and 3D seismic with corresponding well information. Class notes provided.
Seismic Micro Technology: (2d/3dPAK)

Students will utilize the 2d/3dPAK version 6.3 seismic interpretation software to interpret a seismic data set on PC's. This 16-hour course utilizes the latest release of Z-MAP Plus and provides additional hands-on training in the extensive mapping and data management capabilities of Landmark's Z-MAP plus software. Participants should really have a fundamental knowledge of Z-MAP, either through work experience or have previously attended the GTTC Z-MAP Plus basic course. Attendees can select from a range of topics that include aspects of the software not covered, or covered to a limited extent, in desiring a greater depth of knowledge in Z-MAP Plus. This course uses GeoGraphix PRIZM software to interpret well log data on a personal computer. Topics include loading and editing well data, analyzing and interpreting log curves, creating log interpretation equations, picking formation tops, calculating lithologies and other reservoir characteristics, calculating reserves, and creating, interpreting, and editing custom log displays, crossplots, and reports. Integration of PRIZM data into the GES97 and GESXplorer applications will also be discussed and demonstrated. Class notes provided.
