New Nursing Students at Lone Star College-North Harris

Welcome to North Harris Nursing Program! This page is for students who have applied for and been accepted into the North Harris Nursing Programs for Summer/Fall 2008.

GENERAL INFO FOR ALL NEW STUDENTS

The first part of this page is general information for all students, Basic and Transition Track. At the bottom you will find program specific information for each track. If you have any questions, please hang on to them until orientation.

 


Mandatory Drug Screening

A mandatory drug test will be administered by SurScan Drug Screening Solutions. You will need to click on this link SurScan website and follow the instructions on the page. The cost of the test is $45.32. After you have registered via the secured website, you will receive email confirmation of your payment.  More instructions on providing your sample will be included in the email from SurScan. Any concerns regarding your payment should be directed to Sur-Scan Customer Service. SurScan wil provide us with the results of your test. A positive result will result in the revocation of your conditional admission.

Please make sure that your email mailbox is BELOW the size limit so that you can receive emails. If you have not received a reply from SurScan, make sure you have adequate space to receive new email messages.


First Day of Class/Vista
Once you have registered for your classes and been uploaded into Vista by the instructor (usually the Wednesday before the class begins), please check the calendars on Vista for information on your schedule for the first weeks of class. Note: You will NOT be going to clinical for at least the first two weeks of class. Usually, you will meet on campus for orientation from 8am-5pm, Monday through Thursday your first week of class.

Camp Wanna Win

Camp Wanna Win is a series of events over four nights that are designed to give new nursing students an opportunity to meet the faculty and current students while learning studying and preparation techniques that will help them survive nursing school. This year's events for new nursing students will be held during the week of August 18. CWW will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Here is the CWW Flyer. This event is organized and staffed by the Lone Star College-North Harris Student Nurse Association.


Immunization Clinics/ CPR

Please do not attempt to turn in immunization paperwork until after orientation. Please do not get any shots until you have thoroughly reviewed the Immunization FAQ sheet below and attended orientation. We will give you all of the information you need on required immunizations at orientation. However, if you have not begun the Hepatitis B series, please make arrangements to complete the series before May (Transition Track) or July (Basic Track). These clinics are only suggestions. You may use your own physician or any clinic to fullfill the program's requirements.

Please read through the forms below very carefully BEFORE getting any labwork or shots. The hospitals we use as clinical facilities are VERY strict about having the proper paperwork filled out correctly. Detailed instructions will be provided at orientation. If you are unsure about a requirement, please wait for orientation.

Background Checks

Background Checks will be required of ALL students. Specific deadlines can be found below under the information for your specific track. Background checks must be completed by one of the District's four approved vendors and must be current, completed within three months of the deadline posted. Verified Credentials and PreCheck/Student Check will email us your background check. The other two companies will send you an access code, certificate ID, and/or password, please email the code(s) to the Nursing Director at nursing@lonestar.edu as soon as you receive them. You will receive an email within 3-5 business days confirming that the background check has been received.

If you have offenses in your record you will need to contact the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners at www.bne.state.tx.us to review their licensing policies. If you have not received BNE approval to take the licensing exam and your background check shows an offense, your conditional acceptance will be revoked.

National Association of Hispanic Nurses-Houston Chapter Scholarship
www.nahnhouston.org due by September 30, 2009 (yes, it's says 2009??). $1,000. Membership and participation in NAHN-Houston Chapter activities.

Lone Star College-North Harris Student Outreach and Recruitment Support (STARS) Scholarship
call 281-618-5712 or visit WN120. Award varies. Students needed each semester. Must have outgoing personality, own vehicle, and a love for Lone Star College-North Harris.

Uniforms

7-Pocket Scrub Pants www.smartscrubs.com You can choose the brand S.C.R.U.B.S. and "cargo" for style and unisex petite, average and tall options should appear. They offer a polyester/cotton blend that will wash and wear well without ironing (versus the 100% cotton option). The color that appears to be the closest to teal is Ocean Mist (the Tropics option may be a bit too blue). You can get your scrub tops and pants for clinical anywhere you like. This is just one option for the 7-pocket pants. We do not prefer or require this option.




NEW BASIC TRACK STUDENTS

Summer course: RNSG 1172. Class begins on Monday, July 28. Course information can be found in the summer course schedule. You do not need to purchase any items for this course. Comfortable street clothes are acceptable. Please obtain your yellow Basic Nursing badge from the library before July 28.

Fall courses: RNSG 1523, 1119 & 1361. Classes begin on Monday, August 25. Class will be MT from 8-10:20am. Labs will meet on M 10:30-12:20, 12:30-2:20, or 2:30-4:20; or Tues from 11-12:50. Clinical will be W or Th from 7a-5pm and locations vary. You will not follow your registration schedule until the third week of class. Plan to be on campus from 8-5pm Mon-Thurs the first week of class. More info on the schedule will be provided on Vista by your instructors on or about Wednesday, August 20.

You are allowerd to register anytime between July 8 at 9am and the first day of class (August 25). Please register for the same section number in all three fall classes. Error messages and registration holds come from admissions/advising (need new application, residency oath, and testing holds, etc) and must be removed by admissions/advising.

Everyone will meet in mandatory orientations on campus for the first two to three Mondays and Tuesdays of the fall semester. Please check Vista after August 21 for reporting instructions. You will NOT begin attending clinical until at least the second or third week of class.


Deadlines

Background Checks must be received in the Director's office via email or fax by Monday, July 14 . Actual background checks must be sent by the vendor. Access codes can be sent by the student. Please email codes to nursing@lonestar.edu. You will receive an email within 3-5 business days after we receive your email to confirm that we have received it.

Signed Proof of Immunizations Form and accompanying test results (if any), the Physical Exam Form, and a xerox copy of the CPR for Healthcare Providers card must be received by Monday, July 14 at 12 noon to Malinda Yanock in WN166. Failure to meet stated deadlines will result in the revocation of your conditional admission.


Basic Track Required Course Completion

All students are admitted conditionally pending the completion of the required academic coursework. The required academic courses are listed below:

Before Nursing I: PSYC 2301, BIOL 2401, ENGL 1301 & RNSG 1172 (or credit through CNA, EMT or other certification)

Before Nursing II: BIOL 2402 (& RNSG 1301)

Before receiving VNSG certificate: PSYC 2301, PSYC 2314, BIOL 2401, BIOL 2402, BIOL 2420, ENGL 1301, SOCI 1301, KINE, RNSG 1301 & RNSG 1172 (and VNSG summer 2009 electives)

Before Nursing III: BIOL 2420, SOCI 1301 & PSYC 2314

Before Graduation: SPCH 1311 or 1318, KINE, & FA/Humanities elective
