Welcome to North Harris Nursing Program! This page is for students who have applied for and been accepted into the North Harris Nursing Programs for Summer/Fall 2007.

The first part of this page is general information for all students, Basic and Transition Track. At the bottom you will find program specific information for each track. If you have any questions, please hang on to them until orientation or you may contact your Nursing Counselor, Carla Porter.

The Nursing Department will be closed every Friday through August 10, 2007.

Camp Wanna Win is a series of events over four nights that are designed to give new nursing students an opportunity to meet the faculty and current students while learning studying and preparation techniques that will help them survive nursing school. This year's events for new nursing students will be held during the week of August 20. CWW will be from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday in Winship 183; and Family Night on Thursday in the South Dining Hall. Refer to the flyer handed out at orientation and please make sure you RSVP for family night using the Camp Wanna Win box in WN166 (we need a headcount for family night only for ordering food). We'll see you at CWW 2007!

This event is organized and staffed by the NHC Student Nurse Association.

We will give you all of the information you need on required immunizations at orientation. However, if you have not begun the Hepatitis B series, please make arrangements to complete the series before July 16. Please do not attempt to turn in immunization paperwork until after orientation. These clinics are only suggestions. You may use your own physician or any clinic to fullfill the program's requirements.

Please read through the forms below very carefully BEFORE getting any labwork or shots. The hospitals are VERY strict about having the proper paperwork filled out correctly. Detailed instructions will be provided at orientation. If you are unsure about a requirement, please wait for orientation. The only shot that must be started before orientation is the Hepatitis B series, which must be completed by July 16.

Background Checks will be required of ALL students. Background check must be completed by one of the District's three approved vendors and must be current (within three months of the deadline posted). Verified Credentials will email us your background check. The other two companies will send you an access code, certificate ID, and/or password, please email the code(s) to the Nursing Director at [email protected]. You will receive an email within 3-5 business days confirming that the background check has been received.

If you have offenses in your record you will need to contact the Texas Board of Nurse Examiners at www.bne.state.tx.us to review their licensing policies. If you have not received BNE approval to take the licensing exam and your background check shows an offense, your conditional acceptance will be revoked.

You will not be allowed to register until after you have attended orientation. Registration dates will be announced at orientation. You may review the course schedule online in preparation for registration. Error messages and registration holds come from admissions/advising (need new application, residency oath, and testing holds, etc) and must be removed by admissions/advising.

call 281-618-5712 or visit WN120. Award varies. Students needed each semester. Must have outgoing personality, own vehicle, and a love for North Harris College.

7-Pocket Scrub Pants www.smartscrubs.com You can choose the brand S.C.R.U.B.S. and "cargo" for style and unisex petite, average and tall options should appear. They offer a polyester/cotton blend that will wash and wear well without ironing (versus the 100% cotton option). The color that appears to be the closest to teal is Ocean Mist (the Tropics option may be a bit too blue). You can get your scrub tops and pants for clinical anywhere you like. This is just one option for the 7-pocket pants. We do not prefer or require this option.

Required Academic Courses

At the time of application: BIOL 2401, BIOL 2402, ENGL 1301, PSYC 2301, PSYC 2314, RNSG 1301.

Before Summer courses and Nursing III: BIOL 2420 &SOCI 1301.

Before Graduation: SPCH 1311 or 1318, KINE, & FA/Humanities elective

Summer course: RNSG 1172. Class begins on Monday, July 30.

Fall courses: RNSG 1523, 1119 & 1361. Classes begin on Monday, August 27.

You are not allowed to register for any nursing classes (except RNSG 1301 Pharmacology) until after orientation. Students who manage to register before approved by the nursing department will be dropped.  Registration for summer and fall will take place on Monday, June 18 at 9am. Error messages and registration holds come from admissions/advising (need new application, residency oath, and testing holds, etc) and must be removed by admissions/advising.

Everyone will meet in mandatory orientations on campus for the first two to three Mondays and Tuesdays of the fall semester. Please check WebCT after August 21 for reporting instructions. You will NOT begin attending clinical until at least the second or third week of class.

A mandatory drug test will be administered by SurScan Drug Screening Solutions. You will need to go to the SurScan website and follow the instructions on the page. The cost of the test is $45.32. You must go online and register and pay for the test by Monday, June 18. After you have registered, SurScan will contact you via email to schedule your appointment to test. You must use your own email that you check regularly. If you do not check your email and fail to complete the test as scheduled, this is grounds to revoke your conditional admission. Any concerns regarding the scheduling of the test should be directed to Sur-Scan Customer Service. SurScan wil provide us with the results of your test. A positive result will result in the revocation of your conditional admission.

Please make sure that your email mailbox is BELOW the size limit so that you can receive emails. If you have not received a reply from SurScan, make sure you have adequate space to receive new email messages.

Background Checks must be received in the Director's office via email or fax by Monday, July 16 at 12 noon. Actual background checks must be sent by the vendor. Access codes can be sent by the student. Please email codes to [email protected]. You will receive an email within 3-5 business days after we receive your email to confirm that we have received it.

Signed Proof of Immunizations Form and accompanying test results (if any), the Physical Exam Form, and a copy of the CPR for Health Care Providers card must be received by Monday, July 16 at 12 noon to Malinda Yanock in WN166. Failure to meet stated deadlines will result in the revocation of your conditional admission. More information will be provided at orientation. Please do not attempt to turn in paperwork until after orientation.

All students are admitted conditionally pending the completion of the required academic coursework. The required academic courses are listed below:

Before Nursing I: PSYC 2301, BIOL 2401, ENGL 1301 & RNSG 1172 (or credit through CNA, EMT or other certification)

Before Nursing II: BIOL 2402 (& RNSG 1301)

Before receiving VNSG certificate: PSYC 2301, PSYC 2314, BIOL 2401, BIOL 2402, BIOL 2420, ENGL 1301, SOCI 1301, KINE elective, RNSG 1301 & RNSG 1172 (and VNSG summer 2008 electives)

Before Nursing III: BIOL 2420, SOCI 1301 & PSYC 2314

Before Graduation: SPCH 1311 or 1318, KINE, & FA/Humanities elective
