  1. Are course maximums ever overridden?
    Only in situations where the student will be graduating that semester and cannot take the course at another time because of a class conflict.
  2. Is there a way I can place into English 1301 even if my test scores are too low?
    If the test scores are borderline, a student may ask to do a writing sample which will be reviewed by the department.
  3. If I passed the GPE in a previous semester but then dropped the course, do I have to take it again the next semester I enroll?
    Yes, you must pass the GPE during the semester in which you receive credit for the course.
  4. If English 1301 (or 1302) is not required at the university I plan to transfer to, do I have to take it before I take sophomore literature at North Harris?
    Yes, English 1301 and 1302 must be take in sequence before sophomore courses are attempted. It is a requirement of North Harris College.

Philosophy

  1. Do philosophy courses fulfill any course requirements?
    Although they usually count for elective credit, some degrees require philosophy courses. Some business degrees, for example, require a course in Ethics. Both the Ethics and Introduction to Philosophy courses fulfil the Cultural Heritage requirement at the University of Houston. Some degree programs also substitute the Logic course for a mathematics credit. It is the student's responsibility to check with the degree-granting institution to verify transferability?
  2. Does the Philosophy Department participate in the Honors Contract Program?
    Yes. Contracts are available for Introduction to Philosophy, Ethics, and Logic. However, it is up to the discretion of the individual instructor to take on and supervise Honors students.

How can I earn credit by exam for language courses at NHC?

  1. You can take computerized exams (S-CAPE or F-CAPE) for placement. After completing the course where you were placed, you will receive credit for previous course(s).
  2. If you have take the CLEP exam (given monthly at the University of Houston), credit will be granted to you after an interview and a writing sample.
  3. If you have received an AP score for courses take at the high school level, you will also receive credit.

Students with two years of high school Spanish within the last five years must take a placement exam.
