I know this is going to sound lame (and slackerish), but because I have so many other things going on I usually rely on someone e-mailing me that there is a problem. Not very proactive I realize.
Also, there are times (very rarely) when I just roam the site and go through different divisions/departments just looking for consistency and errors and come across tons of things (not just links) that need fixing. **What fun...**
Anyhow, if there is an application or script that we can run to catch bad links, I would be very interested. NHC Library has tons of links in their various reference pages that often need updating and Virginia Rigby has raised this concern to me, but I did not know (if) we had a tool to catch these bad links.
I'm open for just about anything.

Bruce you're not alone! Your methodology and mine are one and the same :-) It would be nice to get an Estrada report. Is there a link checker in Estrada reports? How about in the upgrade? Cynthia, did you try out Chris' tool?

Glad I'm not alone ... NHC Library used to have some tool that they used to check pages, but for some reason they said it stopped working with our pages.
I'll check to see what it was.

No. I haven't checked out xenu yet, but I plan to. I do know that Estrada currently does not have a reporting tool that checks broken links, especially links outside our own site. I don't know what the upgrade includes, but that's a different thread.

Virginia Rigby, librarian, just informed me that the tool they used was LinkBot. Has anyone heard of it. But she goes on to say she had been told it doesn't work within Estrada.

I've heard of it but never used it. Virginia probably got the right information about it not working in Estrada. Could we ask to folks at Gandolf if they have any recommendations or if any of their other customers have successfully used a link check tool? Who would we talk to?

I've heard of it. It's fine. No worries that it doesn't work on our site. There are TONS of free tools and programs we could use to do this. However, I'd prefer to hear from district if Estrada will be including something like this before I go to the trouble of looking for a solution. No sense wasting time...

Understandable. I've just had Monica Norem requesting this for ages and she's very persistent. I guess it's yet another topic I'll bring up to Garret tomorrow.

You bring up an interesting idea a few posts up. Talking to Gandalf ourselves...
It's Eric Hodgson now instead of Shannon Lavett. Do you remember Eric, Cynthia, formerly of STAMATS? He came out when Susan W. thought it would be good to bring in a consultant. Ironic, heh?
Perhaps Eric could set us up a tool for posting questions to Estrada so we don't always have to filter Q&A; through DSTC which is very time consumptive among other things...
Thoughts?
